Get up close with nature and enjoy relaxing in this remote cabin.
The cabins at Þakgil are only open during the summertime. Each cabin has sleeping-bag accommodation for 4 with a double bunk bed.
The kitchen has a gas stove and refrigerator for your convenience. Store some breakfast items in the fridge or cook on the stove in the evenings.
The cabin has a W.C, but the tap only pumps out cold water. There is a shower with warm water at the campsite, which is located next to the cabins.
Þakgil is located between Höfðabrekkuafrétti and Mýrdalssandur, in South Iceland. The name Þakgil is significant in itself. "þak" meaning roof and "gil" meaning canyon. This means the area is secluded and enclosed, in many ways. As the name suggests, the weather is usually very good. To get there, you turn off from Iceland's main Ring Road by Höfðabrekka (5 km east of Vík). The road up to the camping site used to be a part of the Ring Road until 1955. Just follow that road, and you will find a sign that points at Þakgil.
On the accommodation site, there are a lot of beautiful hiking routes fit for everyone. Camping site, bathrooms and shower are available. The dining room is a naturally formed cave, and in it, there is a grill and a fireplace.
Enjoy the summer months here by cooking food on the grill and relaxing in the sunshine. In the winter months, you have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights as this is a remote location where the aurora has been known to be seen dancing in the sky.
Don't miss out on this incredible chance to relax and enjoy staying in a secluded accommodation in Iceland.
