Arbol Guest House is a small and homey bed and breakfast-style accommodation in the center of Husavik in North Iceland. It’s a good choice along the Diamond Circle with whale watching and stunning waterfalls and lakes a short drive away.

Location & Nearby

Husavik is a town in North Iceland along the Skjalfandi Bay that is dubbed the whale watching capital of Europe. It is part of the Diamond Circle on the north coast, only 47 miles (76 kilometers) northeast of the biggest town in the area, Akureyri, and 288 miles (463 kilometers) from Reykjavik. The Arbol Guest House is in the heart of downtown. The Husavik Port, from where whale watching tours depart, is only 0.3 miles (450 meters) from the guesthouse. The iconic Husavik Wooden Church is also the same walking distance away, with the Husavik Museum is just down the street from it. This small museum chronicles the natural and human history of the town and region with bilingual signage. Around 6.5 miles (10.4 kilometers) south of the town and en route from the Husavik Airport is Aeoarfossar Waterfall, a hidden gem located right at an estuary. The most notable attraction less than an hour is Lake Myvatn, which is the fourth largest water body in Iceland at 14 square miles (36.5 square kilometers). Other worthwhile points of interest include the Godafoss Waterfall and Asbyrgi Canyon, which are featured heavily in Icelandic folklore.

Facilities & Amenities

One of Arbol Guest House’s best charms, outside of its central location, is warm and friendly to its staff. The guest house operates as a family-run bed and breakfast and features just 10 rooms. Given that this is a historic property dating back to 1903, the rooms are on the smaller side with shared bathrooms. However, they are clean, comfortable, and decorated in an inviting and simplistic Nordic style. Since it’s not too far from the shoreline, the guest house faces the ocean on one side and a park and a small river on the other. Most of the room types are twin/double and single, but there is a family room that can accommodate up to four people. Parking is free but it is limited, Wi-Fi is free as are the many helpful recommendations from the family that run the place. The owners also sell homemade Icelandic sweaters that make for great souvenirs. The guesthouse includes free breakfast in the dining room that overlooks that city’s central park. It is continental style and one of the highlights of the stay, too, with many great reviews by guests. There is a hammock-strewn backyard deck down by the river that's nice for both enjoying summer sunshine or gazing at winter snowfalls.
