At once both simple and modern, Guesthouse Tilraun sits roadside in Blonduos, the largest urban area of Hunafloi bay in northwest Iceland. Located just off the Ring Road a short walk from the banks of the glacial Blanda River, it's a friendly, three-room option for travelers exploring the Ring Road in North Iceland.
Location & Nearby
Guesthouse Tilraun is in a historic building two blocks south of the River Blanda, a glacial river that splits the charming North Iceland settlement of Blondous in half. On the Tilraun side – the Old Town – features a swarm of original houses from the late 19th and early 20th century. On the north side, much of the town's services, such as schools, supermarkets, community centers, and sports facilities, around found. A small island and natural reserve, Hrutey, is found in between the two and accessible via a pedestrian bridge just off the Ring Road.
The Blonduos Public swimming pool is 0.9 miles (1.5 kilometers) away from the guesthouse. Also nearby, on a hill above town, the most striking building in town. The Blonduoskirkja church isn't your average cathedral. Inspired by a volcanic crater, it stands in metallic-esque cement-like an overground bunker designed by an architect from the future. It's one mile (1.6 kilometers) from Tilraun. Other attractions in Blondous include the Heimilisidnadarsafnid Textile Museum, the only one of its kind in Iceland, a 1.1-mile (1.8-kilometer) walk from the guesthouse. Blondous Golf Course is 3.1 miles (five kilometers) away. Of course, being the largest urban area of Hunafloi bay, Blondous has all the requisite services - gas stations, supermarkets – and the highest-rated restaurant in town, Brimslod Atelier, is practically next door. B&S restaurant (Icelandic, burgers) and Teni (Ethiopian), among others, are also easily reached on foot. The Ring Road is just 0.6 miles (one kilometer) from Tilraun.
Outside town, popular activities in the area include trout fishing and horse riding. Another beautiful church, this one constructed from 3.2-foot (one-meter) thick stone, is 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) away. Thingeyrar church also features a dramatically blue-and-yellow-starred ceiling. The towering flat-topped Spakonufell mountain is also 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) away. The Vatnsnes Peninsula, home to Borgarvirki volcanic plug, among other attractions, is a quick 28 miles (45 kilometers) away as well. The breathtaking basalt columns at Kalfshamarsik cove, a small cove by Kalfshamarsnes cape, is also easily reached at just 26 miles (45 kilometers) north of Tilraun. Don’t miss the Art Deco lighthouse there as well.
