Summary
Description
For a boutique design experience, each room in Thingholt by Center Hotels is infused with Icelandic flair. The hotel is located right by Reykjavik’s downtown with an intimate setting and a spa for those seeking modern, authentic local comfort.
Location & Nearby
Thingholt by Center Hotels is near the northwest corner of downtown Reykjavik, three blocks away from the seafront. It is two blocks from the statue of Ingólfur Arnarson, the first permanent settler in Iceland, and the Culture House Museum. A little further is the quirky Icelandic Phallological Museum which houses over 200 phallic parts of Iceland’s many land and sea mammals.
A less alternative museum nearby is the Icelandic Punk Museum, uniquely showcasing the country’s punk history in old bathroom stalls. It’s only from the hotel, as are the National Gallery and Reykjavik Cathedral. The nearest tour pick-up bus stop is Bus Stop No 3 (Laekjargata) two blocks away. The hotel is also close to many nightclubs and bars, notably the Den Danske Kro with great happy hours, Einstök Bar with its specialty gin cocktails, and Stereo with quality cocktails and quirky atmosphere.
Facilities & Amenities
With only 52 rooms, Thingholt by Center Hotels is a cozy stay with modern and surprisingly spacious rooms. Each of them is designed by the local architect Gulla Jonsdottir to infuse the spirit of Iceland and nature. And, of course, they include modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, minibar, hairdryer, bathrobes, and free WiFi (although there is no air conditioning, something worth considering when visiting in the summer).
The smallest double/twin rooms are 200 square feet (18.6 square meters), deluxe double/twin at 250 square feet (23.2 square meters), and Junior Suites at more than 300 square feet (27.5 square meters). They also have a cosmopolitan Loft Suite with a leather sofa that converts into an extra bed - useful for groups or families.
But the biggest highlight is their onsite Isafold Spa, which includes a gym, a traditional Icelandic steam sauna, and hot tubs, all of which are ideal for unwinding after a long day of exploration. For those who need more R&R, they offer massages as well. Access is free for guests staying in the suites or a one-time fee of 28 USD per person per stay for those staying in standard rooms. There is also a salon on site.
If you are more of the outgoing type, the concierge can help in booking day trips, such as snowmobile safaris in the winter or a visit to the Blue Lagoon. If having a bite or a drink is your choice of relaxation, the hotel’s Isafold Restaurant and Thingholt Bar serve up a curated local and international menu with a wine list and cocktails. Breakfast is included in the stay and served buffet style with both continental and hot food available - perfect for filling up before your day’s adventures.
