Location & Nearby
Country Hotel Heydalur is located in the middle valley of the massive Westfjords region of Iceland, approximately 185 miles (300 kilometers) north of Reykjavik. The highway from Holmavik, a small town 68 miles (110 kilometers) east of the Heydalur Valley, winds through the Westfjords region, which makes the drive a bit longer but so scenic as you make your way to the valley at the bottom of the Mjoifjordur fjord.
Horse riding in groups of two or more is led by professional guides on horseback who show off the strong Icelandic horses. The ride will take you along the valley’s river to the Mjoifjordur fjord, so prepare yourself for an exciting and energetic day. As you hike or ride an Icelandic horse through trickling valley streams or walk the hill’s hiking trails that lead to remote thermal springs, you’ll be tempted to take a dip and relax in the warm natural pool.
As with horse riding, kayaking in the fjords is a day trip but is recommended for experienced kayakers on a calm day. Seal and whale watching are part of the attraction in the fjords.
Facilities & Amenities
The Country Hotel Heydalur has several choices of accommodation, beginning with the farm building itself. The ‘old farm of Hedular’ has choices of standard or superior rooms in single, double, or triple capacities, all with thermally-heated floors. Each room has an outside entrance, big-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. More affordable studio apartments are also available in the old farmhouse area. Perhaps even more tempting is the option of a private cottage away from the farm area. These old-fashioned cottages can accommodate four people or ten people depending on your group. There are three cottages to choose from, each one larger in size and design. And if sleeping in the pristine wilderness under the northern lights is your dream camping trip, then it’s no problem. The Heydalur Country Hotel also has a camping area and thermal pools where you can pitch a tent or stay in your camper trailer, all for a modest fee. The campgrounds also have showers, bathrooms, and a playground for children. Breathtaking views outside your private cottage or your own tent are included.
Country Hotel Heydalur has a five-day winter adventure tour designed to see the famous northern lights. These trips come with professional guides, food, and lodging and may include ice-fishing, snowshoeing, and skiing. These packages are especially recommended for small groups and families. Everything is personalized for the groups. Contact the hotel and check the dates available for these magical trips.
