Location & Nearby
Hotel Akureyri is situated two miles (3.1 kilometers) north of the Akureyri Airport and 5 miles (8.5 kilometers) to the east of Iceland’s largest ski resort at Hlidarfjall (so if skiing is your sport, check ahead at the hotel and the resort for the best times to ski). The ski hill is also great for hiking in the summer months, and the views of the fjord are fantastic. Godafoss waterfall is 21 miles (34 kilometers) east of Hotel Akureyri. It is called the Waterfall of the Gods for its magnificent beauty and historic connection to a Viking god. The Grjotagja cave, famous as the location used in the TV series “Game Of Thrones,” is another must-see location 33 miles (53 kilometers) east of Godafoss waterfall. Another great option to visit is the heritage area of Laufas, which has been the location of Iceland’s Christian priests for centuries. It now has historic houses from the mid 19th century and is located north along the fjord from Akureyri. You can also find all of your traveler’s needs, including gas and groceries, as you go through Akureyri exploring North Iceland.
Facilities & Amenities
Hotel Akureyri consists of three separate buildings. Hotel Akureyri Dynheimar is a converted movie theater that now has micro-suites. The tiny double rooms have all the best comfort possible for the best possible price. The superior double room is slightly larger with a tailor-made luxury bed, record player, guitar, and 55-inch flat-screen TV. Ocean views are available. All rooms have bathrooms and free Wi-Fi.
Hotel Akureyri Dynheimar also has a small restaurant offering breakfast and brunch with classic dishes such as a variety of skyr and granola, bread and bagels, oatmeal-themed dishes, and numerous flavors of smoothies.
Hotel Akureyri Skjaldborg, a heritage building, built in 1924, has larger traditional double rooms that feature pin-lock safety boxes, satellite TV, and high-speed fiber-optic Wi-Fi. Skjaldborg also has garden views and some of the best ocean vistas in Akureyri.
Hotel Akureyri Residence is perhaps the most beautiful of the three buildings. The Residence, a classically decorated villa overlooking the harbor, can be rented as a whole building for up to 17 people in one group. It can also be rented as two separate apartments with seven bedrooms, four bathrooms, and two balconies.
The Urban Farm Akureyri will be available soon, so call the hotel to check on this new feature.
