Join this tour for a spectacular horseback ride along one of Iceland's iconic beaches. This excursion is perfect for those who wish to see this country's unique landscapes in an unconventional and authentically Icelandic way.
Depending on the tides and conditions, this tour will either start at Vellir farm near the town of Hveragerði, where the stables are, or at the southern settlement of Þórlakshöfn. As soon as you arrive, you will be provided with your safety equipment, mount your Icelandic Horse, and can begin to follow your guide on this four to five-hour ride.
Presuming you begin at Þórlakshöfn, you will follow the scenic beach along the edge of the North Atlantic for a few kilometres, riding on soft sand. After a couple of hours, you will reach a beautiful area where the mighty glacial river Ölfusá meets the sea in a large delta.
You'll continue through the shallow water at the edge of the river delta, ride on the grassy banks, before journeying through wetlands and meadows. This will eventually bring you to the farmland in the Ölfus area, where Vellir farm is located.
On the way, your guide will provide you with plenty of opportunities to try the smooth gait unique to the Icelandic horse, the 'tölt'. This is just one of many special traits that this breed has developed, having been isolated on this island for a millennium.
Although this tour focuses on Iceland's coastal landscapes, in good weather you can achieve spectacular views of the volcanos Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, both of which sit beneath glaciers. Out to sea, you may be able to spot the Westman Islands.
Lunch is provided while you are on the tour, and when you get back to the farm, you are welcome to enjoy the cake and coffee.
