Witness the Northern Lights from the surface of the ocean on this boat tour from Akureyri. This trip should appeal to anyone seeking to see one of nature’s greatest marvels in a serene and beautiful setting.
This tour leaves from Akureyri’s harbour, in the heart of town, on a beautiful vessel called the Ambassador. Once you and your group have boarded, it will set sail into Eyjafjörður, the fjord in which the town is nestled.
You will sail out, away from the light pollution of the city, until you are under a canopy of stars, surrounded by enormous, dark mountains. Here, the boat will turn off the engines and lights, and you will stare to the skies, awaiting the arrival of the auroras. Feel free to relax with a complimentary hot drink or glass of wine while you wait.
When the Northern Lights start to descend from the sky, it is mesmerising. Usually green, but also often pink, white, purple, red and even blue, they way in which they dance and swirl amongst the stars is breathtaking. Keep your cameras on hand; the guides on board will tell you the best tips and tricks for capturing them on film.
For two hours, you will be on the water, marvelling at the sky and your surroundings. When the time is over, you will cruise back into the harbour, hopefully awestruck by what you have seen. If you were not lucky enough to catch the lights, do not worry; you will get another opportunity to go again until you do. This tour, however, will only go ahead if the forecast is good and there is little cloud cover so that your valuable time is not wasted.
Set sail into Eyjafjörður, and witness the incredible phenomenon of the Northern Lights. Check availability, by choosing a date.
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and may not appear even under optimal conditions. If they are not expected, this tour will not run, and if they are not seen you will have another opportunity to try and see them.
