Looking to make the most of your vacation and experience a little extra in the Icelandic countryside? Spend an hour at our farm and meet the world-famous Icelandic horse.
This is an ideal ride for beginners, offering a unique opportunity to experience the remarkable character and qualities of this special animal.
We ride at walking pace on comfortable bridle paths around the farm of Kálfholt. If all goes well and our riders are keen, we may try out the livelier tölt, a smooth-running gait characteristic of the Icelandic horse.
The Icelandic horse is a unique breed, known for its intelligence and curiosity. You’ll be charmed by their friendly, inquisitive nature as they take you on your journey around the farm. They were brought to Iceland by the first settlers and have adapted to the sometimes harsh climate and terrain of the island. Today, they are known for their specialized gaits - five of them, while most other horse breeds have only three.
Kálfholt is a family-run horse breeding farm located on the eastern banks of the Þórsá river between the towns of Selfoss and Hella in South Iceland. The farm has been in the family since 1965 and in 1985 began to focus exclusively on breeding top quality Icelandic horses.
Today the farm boasts about 100 horses, several of which have gone on to become national champions in many competitions around the country, such as Landsmót 1998.
The breeding and training is carried out by the whole family and plays a large role in the daily activities of Kálfholt. Guests will have a tour of the stables and get to meet some of the horses.
