Description

Enjoy the many geological marvels and geothermal wonders that reside on the Reykjanes Peninsula. This sightseeing tour is perfect for those who want to witness Iceland’s raw volcanism while avoiding the most crowded tourist destinations.

You will be picked up from Reykjavík in the morning, and be whisked south-west to Reykjanes. If, like almost every other traveller in the country, you arrived in Iceland at Keflavík International Airport, you will have seen some of this barren and haunting peninsula as you headed to the capital. To explore it in depth, however, will reveal hidden gem after hidden gem.

There are a multitude of sites to get to on this tour. First up will be several beautiful lakes. The largest of these, Kleifarvatn, is serene in itself, but surrounded by massive, jagged mountains; part of it also gently bubbles due to the geothermal activity beneath the surface. Grænavatn is also on the agenda, an unusual crater lake, that lives up to its name of the ‘Green Lake’.

Next up are the peninsula’s geothermal areas. Krýsuvík has a walkway that will lead you over multicoloured patches of earth to the site’s fumaroles and hot springs and has many signs explaining the subterranean forces at work here. Gunnuhver’s main attraction is the largest mud-pot in the country, and its signs, conversely, will tell you all about the region’s folklore.

You will spend the next part of the tour along the dramatic, craggy coastline of the Reykjanes Peninsula to look out for the birds. Dozens of species and tens of thousands of individuals nest on the peninsula, making it quite the birdwatcher’s paradise.

This tour is perfect to book if you want to get to the Blue Lagoon or the airport after your exploration, as your guide can drop you off at both locations. If you opt for the lagoon, you will need to book your ticket in advance, as well as the bus transfer back (buses run very regularly between the pools and capital).

Don’t miss this amazing day of sightseeing across the little-explored Reykjanes Peninsula. Check availability by choosing a date.
