Have the adventure of a lifetime with this private Super Jeep tour of one of the world’s most beautiful sightseeing routes. The Diamond Circle of northeast Iceland features some of the most breathtaking natural features the world has to offer. From waterfalls to lakes to canyons, you’ll be able to experience the best of what this island nation’s natural wonders have to offer.
We start our tour from Akureyri, following Eyjafjörður and traveling over the mountain pass.
Our first stop is Godafoss, the waterfall of the Gods. This impressive water feature is famous in history for being the site of Iceland’s decision to convert from pagan beliefs to Christianity. The Ásatrú priest Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, under the threat of invasion from Norway, cast idols of the Old Gods into the waterfall, making this a spot of incredible cultural significance for Icelanders.
Afterward, we will keep on driving in the direction of Mývatn. Here, we discover the amazing lava formations of Dimmuborgir and the geothermal area of Námaskard, where the earth is boiling.
Our next stop will be the Dettifoss, Selfoss, and Hafragilsfoss, a row of impressive waterfalls. Dettifoss is said to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Fed by the glacial waters of Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull, Dettifoss, and its neighboring waterfalls are not to be missed by anyone visiting the region.
The route takes us then on a highland road to the ancient craters of Hljóðaklettar. Then we head further north to the horseshoe-shaped Ásbyrgi canyon. Legend says that Ásbyrgi was created by Odin’s eight-legged horse stomping its foot into the ground. The impression is now filled with a gorgeous woodland of willow and birch trees and offers incredible opportunities for photographs.
On our way to the fishing village of Húsavík, we may discover some puffins, which are common in the region.
We end our tour driving back to Akureyri. This is a round trip, driven by a certified local guide. Your Super Jeep transport is also equipped with free Wi-Fi. Select a date to learn about booking availability.
