Daily itinerary

Day 1
Öxarárfoss is a stunning waterfall found at Þingvellir National Park.

Day 1 - The Eyrie

Today begins your adventure in Iceland, and you’ll start with a 3-day journey of the Golden Circle and the South Coast. You’ll be picked up in the morning and whisked away to Iceland’s most popular sightseeing trail, the Golden Circle. There, you’ll find not only historical locations, erupting geysers, and beautiful waterfalls, but also the pass to the impregnable Eyrie.

Your first stop of the day is at Þingvellir National Park. Here, you can admire waterfalls, streams, jagged rock cliffs, and huge fissures, but it stands neither on the North American nor the Eurasian tectonic plate but in a rift valley between. This will provide you with a lunar-like landscape and the opportunity to see the exposed continental boundaries.

In the Game of Thrones world, Þingvellir doubles as the Bloody Gate. In Iceland, it is a rocky path that leads to the Öxarárfoss waterfall, but listen carefully, and perhaps you’ll hear Arya’s laughter echoing off the walls of the ravine.

From Þingvellir National Park, you’ll travel to Haukadalur, a valley filled with history and folklore but, more importantly, erupting geysers! It is here where you’ll find, amongst bubbling mud pools and fumaroles, the geyser Strokkur, which erupts every 5-10 minutes to heights of 49-67 feet (15-20 meters).

The last stop on the Golden Circle route is the waterfall Gullfoss where you’ll be sure to find the power and magnificence of this great fall spell-binding. The Hvítá river, which is fed by Langjökull glacier, plummets 105 feet (32 meters) in two ‘steps’ into a canyon created in the last ice age.

Before heading to your accommodation on the South Coast, you will have the opportunity to hunt for the elusive Northern Lights before retiring to your hotel on the South Coast.

Day 2
The rock arch at Dyrhólaey on the South Coast can be seen in some scenes from the TV show Game of Thrones.

Day 2 - Eastwatch-by-the-Sea

Today, you’ll travel the South Coast and have your own adventure before finding where Jon Snow and crew arrived at Eastwatch via boat in Season 7. First up are, however, a few of the South Coast’s most stunning waterfalls.

The stars of the South Coast are undoubtedly the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. The former falls down a concave cliff, making it possible to fully encircle the curtain of water if the pathway is clear. The latter, Skógafoss, cascades 197 feet (60 meters) down onto very flat land, allowing you to walk right up to the wall of water.

Then you’ll make your way towards the glacier tongue of Sólheimajökull, where a highly experienced glacier guide will greet you. After a short introduction on how to hike up on a glacier, you will follow your guide and trek past deep crevasses and strange ice sculptures to get unbelievable views of the glacial landscapes. Although no scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed here, the scenery is reminiscent of those beyond the Wall.

Then it is off to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, Reynisfjara black sand beach. Here you can watch as the pounding waves of the Atlantic Ocean hit the smooth black sand and the nearby cliffs. Out in the ocean rise the Reynisdrangar sea stack. According to legend, they were once trolls that got turned into stone by the sunlight.

Depending on the season, you will either make your way back to your accommodations on the South Coast or head into Vatnajökull National Park, where you’ll make a quick stop at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon before finding your accommodations nearby. You will, however, get to explore the lagoon tomorrow fully.

Day 3
The glacier at Skaftafell was used for scenes beyond the Wall in Game of Thrones.

Day 3 - Beyond the Wall

The day starts with a visit to the stunning Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Here, icebergs that have broken off a nearby glacier float on a serene lagoon before finding their way towards the open sea. Nearby, you’ll find the Diamond Beach, where bergs from the lagoon have washed up on shore and lie glistening like gemstones on the black sand.

If you are visiting in the summer, you will have the chance to explore these icebergs even further with a boat ride on the lagoon. As you sail amongst the massive ice, you might hear the crackling noises they make as they rub up against each other, or you could spot a seal or two as they’ve been known to lounge on the bergs.

If, however, you are visiting in the winter, you will board a large truck that will take you up the nearby glacier, where you can explore the insides of an authentic ice cave.

You will then head back to Reykjavík, passing first through Skaftafell Nature Reserve, where the snowy landscapes of Beyond the Wall were filmed before you are dropped off near the accommodations you have booked yourself.

Day 4
The Hound in Game of Thrones described Kirkjufell on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula as 'the mountain like an arrowhead'.

Day 4 - The Mountain Shaped like an Arrowhead

Today, you'll be picked up bright and early in the morning and driven through Iceland's west coast to the mysterious Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It is here where you'll find legendary glaciers, dramatic cliffs, charming villages, and 'the mountain like an arrowhead'.

The day's first stop is at the hamlet Arnarstapi where you can hike along the jagged shoreline to the massive rock arch, Gatklettur, and the even bigger Lóndrangar cliffs.

In the summer, the area is teeming with birds, but the winters provide it with a beautiful contrasting scene of white snow and dark cliffs.

From there, you'll travel through a maze of lava formation until you get to the black pebble beach of Djúpalónssandur. Here, you can find four large stones that were used to measure the strength of Icelandic fishermen in days gone past. See how you would measure up.

You will then continue on your journey with the ever-present Snæfellsjökull glacier looming over you. The glacier served as the entryway to the subterranean trip in Jules Verne's classic sci-fi novel 'A Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. However, you will be visiting another location straight out of the pages of a fantasy novel: the mountain shaped like an arrowhead, Kirkjufell.

In Game of Thrones, Kirkjufell was used as a landmark Beyond the Wall and was first described by the Hound in a fire vision. You will have plenty of chances to photograph this picturesque mountain as well as the nearby waterfall before you hop back on the bus and return to your accommodations in Reykjavík.

Day 5
Grjótagjá cave in the Lake Mývatn area was used as Jon Snow and Ygritte's romantic getaway in Game of Thrones.

Day 5 - Wildlings & White Walkers

Start the day by making your way to the Reykjavík Domestic Airport, where you will board a plane that will take you to the northern town of Akureyri. There, you will be greeted by a guide who will take you on a tour of the stunning Lake Mývatn area, which served as the freezing wastes north of the Wall populated by Wildlings and White Walkers.

The first stop you will make today is at Goðafoss, the 'Waterfall of the Gods'. Your guide will tell you the legend on how this beautiful cascade got its name and show you where you can snap the perfect photo of the falls.

Then it is off to the Lake Mývatn area where you will see the pseudocraters of Skútustaðagígar, which lie scattered around the lake. The whole region was formed in an eruption some 2,000 years ago, resulting in the strange and otherworldly landscapes around Mývatn.

From there, you'll move to the lava field of Dimmuborgir, where you'll find stacks of black lava rocks, caves, and perhaps the Wildling leader Mance Rayder's camp. From there, you'll move to Grjótagjá, a cave with a beautiful, blue hot spring inside. You might recognize it as Jon Snow and Ygritte's romantic hideaway.

You'll stop at the geothermal area of Hverir by Mt. Námafjall. Due to the intense heat underground, you will be able to see boiling mud pools and steaming fumaroles here. The minerals in the ground have painted the whole area in shades of unbelievable colors. It is also the location where Samwell Tarley wandered through an impenetrable blizzard.

If you wish, you'll end the tour by relaxing in the warm waters of the famed Mývatn Nature Baths. It is the perfect way to unwind after days of exploring Iceland and Westeros before returning to Reykjavík in the evening.

Good to know

For your overnight stay on the south coast, it is recommended that you pack lightly. If you wish to repack a smaller suitcase or backpack before your journey, luggage storage will be available.

Please be aware that some of these activities are weather-dependent.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and therefore cannot be guaranteed, but this itinerary is designed to maximize your chances to see them if the weather allows.

Note that Icelandic roads and pavements can be slippery in the wintertime. We recommend you bring shoes with slip-resistant soles or ice-grip shoe covers. The covers can be purchased in most supermarkets and gas stations around the country.
