Diving Day Tour | Davidsgja - David's Fissure

David's fissure is like Silfra's big brother. It is a long crack at the bottom of Þingvallavatn Lake in South West Iceland, about 1 hour from Reykjavik. It is little over a 5-minute drive from Silfra further down the shore and is accessible by walking into the water.

There is no current and as long as it is not windy it is very easy to wade in and put your fins on in waist deep water, before heading off to begin the dive.

The water at David’s crack is usually a little warmer than Silfra. This is because as the cold glacial water enters the lake at Silfra it is diluted by the rest of the water in the lake. However, it is only a few degrees warmer!

There is a higher likelihood of seeing some fish during the dive than at Silfra, and there are not as many other divers at this site. The fish can grow very big in the lake and are more likely to be seen in the summer. There are brown trouts and arctic chars in the lake, but brown trout is the most prominent species to be seen.

There are in fact two fissures, which run parallel to each other and continue for quite a long distance along the lake bed. They start at around 4m depth not far from the shore and continue all the way to 30-40m.

It is a long swim to get this kind of depth. Within the cracks, if you descend below them you can feel the water temperature change dramatically as the colder water collects in the crack.

The dive tour offers two different dives, with one taking the left option and another the right, both of the dives offer something different in term of the topography of the cracks
