Your meeting point is the parking lot at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. It’s best to arrive 15 minutes early to check in and use the restrooms before heading into the wild. There are no facilities once you're on the ice.
From there, hop aboard a sturdy 4×4 vehicle for a rugged drive toward the glacier. About 10 minutes in, you’ll leave the main road and bump along a scenic F-Road, crossing an ancient glacial plain. As the mountains grow larger around you, your guide will share stories of the landscape’s powerful history.
Soon, you’ll reach the edge of the glacier, where a natural wonder awaits. Welcome to the Crystal Ice Cave, also known as the Sapphire Ice Cave. Each year, this cave melts and reforms, so no two visits are ever the same. One winter, it may be wide and open, another, it might resemble a narrow, glowing tunnel. That’s part of the magic.
Before stepping inside, your guide will help you put on crampons and give a safety briefing. You’ll then walk onto the glacier and into a shimmering world of deep blue ice.
Your guide will photograph you inside the cave, using their experience to capture beautiful, natural portraits in this magical setting. You’ll have about an hour to explore and enjoy the cave while learning how it forms, melts, and reforms each year.
From there, your adventure continues as you hike onto Breidamerkurjokull Glacier. It’s a one-of-a-kind sensation, walking on the ice while the snow crunches underfoot. Your guide will point out fascinating formations along the way, including moulins (deep vertical shafts carved into the glacier by water).
Eventually, you’ll reach a sloping path that leads into a breathtaking ice canyon. These stunning crystal crevasses (cracks in ice) are tucked away like a hidden secret. Spend time exploring the icy maze and soaking up the scenery before climbing back up and returning to the glacier parking area.
Your tour ends with a 30-minute ride back to the Glacier Lagoon, where you'll say farewell to your guide and choose your favorite photos from the day.
