Experience diverse natural landscapes in North Iceland with this family-friendly horse riding tour. This trip should not be missed by those who want to experience incredible nature, and who want to introduce themselves to this country’s unique and beautiful horse breed.
You will find the stables at the farm Hraunkot, just south of the northern town of Húsavík. Here, you will meet your friendly, expert guides, who will provide you with all necessary gear, and introduce you to your steed.
If you are a beginner rider, you will be provided with a horse known for its gentleness which matches your size. All Icelandic horses are friendly and easy to manage, but if you are more experienced, you might get one who is a bit of a quirky character; each member of this breed is an intelligent, social individual with a unique personality.
You will spend a few minutes around the stables before the adventure truly begins. Once you are ready, you will set off alongside the river Skjálfandi, into some gorgeous landscapes of wildflower fields and rural countryside. You’ll then move onto a sheep track, which winds through a stretch of mossy, rugged lava until you emerge onto a black sand desert.
Here, you will be able to pick up the speed; experienced riders can practice the flying pace, while novices are welcome to give the tölt and gallop a go. The tölt is unique to the Icelandic horse, developed to help them speedily get across snowy terrain without causing discomfort to the rider.
You will take an alternate route back to Hraunkot farm, passing by a historic church, and trail through a birch forest. Birch forests used to cover Iceland, so for this section, you will feel like historic Icelanders have done from settlement to industrialisation.
Mount up and take a beautiful horse-ride through a countryside of lava fields, black sand deserts and birch forests in North Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.
