Description

Scale the heights of the crystal blue Falljokull glacier, and explore the glacial wonders on this challenging yet rewarding five-hour hiking tour with a small group. Fit, adventurous travelers eager to achieve a new accomplishment in a way that embodies Icelandic activities will find this to be a fantastic opportunity.

You’ll start by meeting your expert guides at the glacier base camp in Skaftafell Nature Reserve, a magnificent feature of Vatnajokull National Park. Note that only eight are allowed on the tour, guaranteeing you a personalized experience. You’ll be dressed in all necessary safety equipment here, then led onto the specially modified Glacier Bus. This will take you on a short journey through some impressive landscapes until dropping you off at the edge of Falljokull.

After a safety briefing, the journey begins; you’ll take your first step from earth to the ice, feel your crampons and ax grip their slippery surface, and start your ascent.

Falljokull has all the incredible features that make Iceland’s ice caps such sought-after destinations. Their colors range from ash black, to snow-white, to all shades of blue. Their formations are breathtaking, ranging from caverns to ridges, fragile sculptures to great walls of ice, bottomless crevasses, to churning waterfalls. The water running off them is crystal clear and drinkable, and the views are more and more breathtaking the higher you ascend.

This tour, however, culminates when you reach an area few others have the determination to go: an ice labyrinth. Your guide will lead you through these narrow, naturally formed corridors to discover hidden areas of fairytale-like beauty and take you into magnificent caves to marvel over their unreal colors and textures.

After 3.5 hours on - and under - the surface of the glacier, you’ll return to the Glacier Bus for a drive back to base camp. Though no doubt a little tired after such an exhilarating adventure, you’ll no doubt be thrilled at the sense of accomplishment that this tour brings.

Push yourself and reap the rewards by booking this incredible five-hour glacier trip from Skaftafell. Check availability by choosing a date.
