Description

Join us for a family-friendly riding tour, riding the black sands near Vík and experience the landscapes in a magical way. Families with young children can join us for a fun and easy introduction to horse riding along the beach. Our family tour lasts approximately half an hour and takes you out on to the black sands here at Vík.

This tour is ideally suited for those aged six and up and their families, as we can provide individual assistance – including lead reins – for those who would like it. After introducing you to our horses and giving a short demonstration covering the basics of horse riding, we will head outside and start the tour.

We begin along the sea wall running parallel to the beach, giving beautiful views out over Víkurfjara beach, Reynisfjall mountain, and the famous Reynisdrangar rocks. We then head down to the beach itself and spend time strolling along the dark, soft sand and watching the rolling waves. Vik is a haven for wildlife so you may be lucky enough to spot many different kinds of seabirds, seals, or even whales while out riding.

This tour also offers beautiful views up to the village church, to the hills behind, and – if the weather is kind – the Mýrdalsjökull glacier beyond. We also try and make time for a photo stop during the ride, to make sure you can capture the memory of your time on an Icelandic horse forever.

We operate all year round and always make sure that the tours are adapted for the needs and abilities of our riders, to make a memorable and unique experience while staying safe and comfortable. Our international staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and happy to answer questions about Iceland, the local area, and of course the unique Icelandic horses. All of our horses have their own personalities and are great representatives of this friendly, hardy, and curious breed.

A visit to the black sand beaches is an essential part of any trip to South Iceland, but doing so on the back of an Icelandic horse makes this an extraordinary experience for the whole family. Check availability by choosing a date.

Good to know

There is a weight limit of 100 kg (220 lbs) maximum for each rider.

Those with hip, knee, or back problems are discouraged from booking. The riders have to be able to hold the reins and follow the guides’ instructions at all times. The operators will exclude riders in case of pregnancy or severe impairment.

In case of extreme weather, the operator might have to cancel or reschedule tours or readjust the route of the ride. Since the weather in Vík is very changeable, they take such decisions right before departure. In case of cancellation, the tour will be refunded.
