Golden Circle Minibus Tour | With Visit To The Earthquake Exhibition

Jump aboard this essential Icelandic excursion to three of the country’s most iconic and beautiful sites; Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss waterfall. These must-see destinations compose the Golden Circle, the most popular tourist trail in Iceland.

You will be picked up in a comfortable minibus, and head straight out to Þingvellir National Park. The name of this site translates to ‘Fields of Parliament’ due to its long and fascinating history. It was here in 930 AD that early Icelanders founded ‘the Alþingi’, an institution based on representative governance. This institution continues in Reykjavík today, making this National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site the original location of the world’s longest-running, ongoing parliament.

Þingvellir is more than just its history, however. It is located right where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart, and nowhere else in the world can you witness this so clearly. The effect of this geology has led to some beautiful nature, with moss-covered lava fields and ravines filled with spring water.

After enjoying this site, you will head to the Geysir Geothermal Area. The Great Geysir was the first geyser described in Western literature, thus granted all others their name. It is largely inactive these days, but its neighbour Strokkur still erupts every ten minutes or so, blasting water well over twenty metres high.

Both of these geysers are nestled in a steaming geothermal area. There are many mud pots, fumaroles and hot springs to enjoy while walking around.

The third and final official stop of the Golden Circle is at Gullfoss. This mesmerising waterfall falls in two tiers, plunging into an ancient valley and releasing a huge amount of spray as it does; on a sunny day, the water throws off many rainbows. The river that feeds Gullfoss is the Hvíta, the most popular place for rafting in the country.

On your return journey from here, you will make one more stop, in the settlement of Hveragerði. This town is renowned for its geothermal activity; there are many hot springs in the surrounding area, and the restaurants cook here simply by burying food into the earth, where boiling water runs just under the surface. You will visit the Earthquake Exhibition in the village, to learn about the large quake that struck in 2008.

Once you have enjoyed these four sites, you will be whisked back to your accommodation in Reykjavík, no doubt still marvelling over the awe-inspiring places you have seen.

See the iconic sites of the Golden Circle, with a visit to ‘the earthquake town’ of Hveragerði, on this incredible day tour. Check availability by choosing a date.
