Description

Hop on the bus to journey to one of the most breathtaking natural sights in Iceland - the highly popular Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. This tour is for anyone who would like to spend time absorbing themselves in the unique and picturesque landscapes of the south coast.

You’ll be picked up in the morning from your designated pickup location in central Reykjavik and spirited down the south coast. Whether it is sunwashed or wreathed in mist, the south coast is a treasure trove of beautiful sights. You’ll pass grassy fields dotted with sheep and horses, cascading waterfalls and waves of purple lupine covering crags of black rock. You will stop at the small village of Vík, a lovely place to stop for a cup of coffee, browse for souvenirs and take a short walk to stretch your legs.

Next, you’ll pass by the largest glacier in Iceland, Vatnajökull, as you make your way to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. The lagoon is a favorite amongst nature lovers and photography enthusiasts who flock to Iceland each year to catch the icebergs in all their glory. The ice here is white on one side, bleached from the UV rays of the sun, but a brilliant crystalline blue on the bottom, where oxygen bubbles have been crushed into the layers of ice over time. The lagoon’s size increases slightly every year, as climate change increases the amount of meltwater pouring down to the coast.

While the lagoon is not very wide, it is the deepest lake in Iceland at 250 m (280 ft) deep. Boat tours of the lagoon are a popular pastime for visitors, and you will enjoy a spin around the water for a close-up view of the magical ice and happy seals, playing in the water.

You can also take lunch at the Lagoon Service Center, or walk to nearby Diamond Beach to admire the chunks of ice which have washed up on the black sand shores. On the return to Reykjavik, you’ll also visit the waterfall Seljalandsfoss.
