Hike along the spectacular coastlines around Siglufjordur, and learn about the region’s fascinating, isolated history by booking this trek. Those in north Iceland looking to get off the beaten track and combine nature with culture will find this to be a perfect trip out.

You’ll meet your friendly guides by the base camp in Siglufjordur, who will drive you just five minutes down the road out of town to the start of the hike. Be sure to admire the quaint historic buildings here as you drive out, and ask any questions you may have to your driver, who is a local expert.

All in all, the hike will cover eight kilometers over three and a half hours, but worry not about overexerting yourself; your pace will be relaxed, and the route is relatively level and so filled with wonder that you’ll be distracted throughout. However, note that some points become quite marshy, you will want waterproof hiking boots.

Of course, the fjord of Siglufjordur is magnificent in and of itself, sheltered by vast mountains, filled with gleaming waters, and home to a wealth of wildlife, with seabirds, seals, and even whales and dolphins. There are, however, many lesser-known, smaller sites that will maintain your intrigue.

For example, you’ll pass the Evangar Herring Plant - or what is left of it. Destroyed along with several houses in 1919, there is now just a ruin with a haunting air of loss. You’ll also be able to marvel over the village of Siglunes, which, like many local settlements, was abandoned due to the country’s industrialization; this, however, was one of the last to be deserted, having lost its last residents in 1988.

Your final destination on the route will be the beautiful lighthouse of Selnesviti. From here, you’ll have magnificent views of the surrounding coastline and Siglufjordur in the distance, allowing for some incredible photos in good weather. After enjoying this short break, you’ll hike back to your starting location.

Explore the beautiful coastline around Siglufjordur and immerse yourself in the area’s history with this wonderful hiking tour. Check availability by choosing a date.
