Description
Take an exploration into one of the most marvellous creations of nature: the ice caves beneath Vatnajökull glacier. This tour should not be missed by those seeking the best experiences Iceland in winter has to offer.
The tour begins at the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in south-east Iceland. You must get there yourself, but considering the appeal of this site - a huge lake filled with giant icebergs - and the number of attractions that line the South Coast from Reykjavík, reaching it will be a joy.
Your guide will meet your private group in the carpark, where you will board their Super Jeep. You will then set off around south-east Iceland towards your glacier cave. This journey can take up to two hours but goes through the spectacular scenery of Vatnajökull National Park so you can spend the time staring in awe out of the window.
The ice caves form throughout summer due to rainwater and meltwater eroding their way out of the glacier, but they are not stable until the temperatures fall below freezing in winter. As such, visitors only have a small window to catch them in, and few are lucky enough to get the chance.
As soon as you reach the mouth of your cave and your guide has checked to ensure it is structurally sound, they will provide you with a helmet and crampons and tell you about the safety. With that complete, the exploration will begin.
The electric blue colour of the silky smooth ice that walls you throughout is so beautiful that it barely seems nature. You will no doubt be mesmerised as you explore the chambers and channels, and your memory cards will surely be full within minutes. As you travel, your guide will talk about the science behind these marvellous formations, and answer any questions you may have.
After a fascinating adventure, you’ll return to the Super Jeep and be whisked back to Jökulsárlón.
