Viðey Island's only light pollution is the Peace Tower, making it perfect for Northern Lights watching.

Enjoy an evening on the peaceful and serene island of Viðey, just off the coast of Reykjavík, on this Imagine Peace Tower and Northern Lights Cruise tour combo. If you want to have a magical night in Iceland without leaving the capital region, this is the adventure for you.

Your tour starts as you collect your tickets at Reykjavík's Old Harbour, located right in the heart of the city. Then, you make your way to the visitor centre where you can catch a screening of a film about the Imagine Peace Tower narrated by Yoko Ono, but the tower gets lit up every year at John Lennon's birthday, representing his and Yoko's ideology of peace.

Then, you'll catch a short ferry ride to the idyllic island of Viðey where you will spend the majority of your evening, learning about art and history and searching for the amazing Northern Lights in the vast starry sky, far from the capital's light pollution.

You start by trekking the hill from the dock up to the oldest stone house in all of Iceland, which now houses the charming Viðeyjarstofa Café. Walking a bit further, you soon begin to see the beacon of light from the peace tower. Each year, it is lit on Lennon’s birthday and allowed to shine in all its grandeur until the date of his demise.

If it gets too cold, you have the option to enter the old school house and warm up with some hot chocolate before heading back out in search for the auroras. For those interested in photographing the Northern Lights, the crew can help you set up the gear and assist you with the best settings needed for capturing them.

The amazing foreground, that is the charming buildings of the island and background of the mountain ridge surrounding the bay, will make for fantastical photo opportunities. You could even catch the Imagine Peace Tower and Northern Lights together!

When your magical evening comes to an end, you'll catch the ferry back to the Old Harbour.

Don't miss out on this combo adventure to Viðey Island, visiting the symbol for world peace and searching for the Northern Lights at one of the most optimal aurora hunting locations in the Capital Region. Check availability by choosing a date.
