Step right up to join this fully guided tour of the most popular and unique sites along the south coast of Iceland, along with one of the rarest experiences of all - exploring an ice cave under Vatnajökull glacier! This tour is for anyone looking to make their time in Iceland extra special, while still visiting all the attractions which have made Iceland one of the most famous travel destinations in the world.

You’ll be picked up at your accommodation in Reykjavik and driven down the picture-worthy South Coast on the famous Highway 1 which impressively encircles the entire country.

Over the next two days, you’ll explore the coast, particularly waterfalls and black sand beaches, all the way to the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. You have a chance overnight to spend time in the evening looking high above for signs of the Northern Lights, which delight all those who see them.

For the next big adventure, you’ll make your way to an ice cave near Vatnajökull glacier, the largest glacier in Europe. There is extremely limited availability to see these rare, naturally occurring structures, so book your place now to ensure that you will be able to see it this year.

Each season, as the weather cools, specialists begin to explore the area around the glacier, searching for ice caves large enough and safe enough to explore inside. Each one is unique, filled with rock structures painted with frost, sheets of transparent ice the colour of a tropical sea, and ice sculptures in strange and fascinating shapes. The weather may warm suddenly at any time, in which case melting begins, and it is gone forever.

Throughout your adventure, you will stay at the best available accommodation which gives you added comfort at the end of each incredible day.

Don’t miss your chance to explore the heart of the glacier! Check availability by choosing a date.

For example, a group of 8 will receive 2 triple rooms and 1 double. If these arrangements do not meet your requirements, please contact the provider.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and therefore cannot be guaranteed, but this itinerary is designed to maximise your chances to see them if weather allows. Please be advised that there is no specific Northern Lights hunt on this tour, but your guide will notify you if the conditions are favourable and advise you on how to best spot them.

It can happen, in the case of extreme weather, that an activity is cancelled. If your chosen activity is cancelled, we will assist you with rearranging or booking other activities when possible, and any potential price difference will be refunded to you.

Please note that only pick up and drop-off from designated pick up locations in the greater capital area is available, not from Keflavík International Airport. Therefore, we do not recommend attempting to start this tour on your arrival day in Iceland. Arrival time back to Reykjavík at the end of your tour can vary depending on weather and traffic. It is highly recommended that you do not book your flight home the same night as bad weather or delays could affect your journey. Please be sure to arrange accommodation for this evening and an airport transfer the next day to take you to Keflavík International Airport for your departure.

For your convenience, it is recommended that you pack lightly for this tour, in a small bag or backpack. If you have large luggage with you, please check with your accommodation if they offer luggage storage for your time on this tour. If that is not a possibility, you can take your larger luggage along for a small fee.

Note that Icelandic roads and pavements can be slippery in the wintertime. We recommend you bring shoes with slip-resistant soles or ice-grip shoe covers. The covers can be purchased in most supermarkets and gas stations around the country.

Cancellation Insurance

This insurance guarantees that you can cancel tour and package bookings and receive a full refund, minus the insurance cost of 5,000 ISK per person.

The cancellation must be made more than 48 hours before the listed starting time on your voucher. To cancel your booking and claim your refund, simply contact info@guidetoiceland.is and declare full cancellation.

Please note that this insurance covers the cancellation of the whole tour or package. Individual services cannot be cancelled and refunded separately, but are all covered and refunded in case of a full cancellation.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - The South Coast

Seljalandsfoss waterfall on the south coast of Iceland

After the lights of the city have faded behind you, you’ll zoom through the countryside, heading toward the famous volcano under a glacier, Eyjafjallajökull, which made headlines around the world when it last erupted in 2010. Seljalandsfoss waterfall is found at the foot of this glacier, and it cascades a vast 60-metres down from the interior.

Next, you’ll see Skógafoss waterfall, 18 stories high, plunging down from cliffs which used to mark the coastline of Iceland during the last Ice Age.

Continuing down the coast, you’ll see the awesome power of the Atlantic Ocean as it pummels the black sands at Reynisfjara Beach. Black basalt carves strange column shapes in the cliffs and forms sea stacks not far from the shore.

After stopping for some refreshments, you’ll continue through imposing sand plains and lava fields. The highlight of this day will be Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, a deep lake filled with huge chunks of glacial ice slowly drifting out to sea.

For your evening accommodation, you will stay at Hotel Höfn, arriving around dinner time - just in time to try the lobster in a town that is famous for langoustine! You’ll spend the evening looking for the Northern Lights if the Aurora forecast and cloud cover is right.

During holiday seasons (e.g. Christmas and New Year), accommodation might be arranged at other locations in the southeast. Please refer to the accommodation section for more details.

Day 2 - Ice Caving

A naturally formed ice-tunnel inside of one Iceland's enormous glaciers.

Today's journey will be dominated by the excitement of ice cave exploration. Good hiking shoes are essential, as it will take a few minutes' to hike to the cave; they should cover your ankles to prevent your feet from getting wet if there is a little meltwater.

It is important when spending time in an ice cave to proceed with caution and heed the advice of your guide. Glaciers are truly spectacular, but it is not possible to visit without a specialized guide and the necessary equipment.

You'll have at least 45 minutes to explore, if not more. Be sure that your winter hat is not so bulky that it won't fit under your caving helmet. Safety first! Your guide will share with you his expertise and knowledge about the ice caves, allowing you to truly appreciate this amazing natural phenomenon.

During the drive back to Reykjavík, you will travel again through the beautiful stretch of coastline on Iceland's south shore. Your guide will point out anything that you missed the day before and if atmospheric conditions are right, you may have another opportunity to look for the Northern Lights.

You'll arrive in Reykjavík in the evening and it is recommended that you do not plan to fly from Keflavík International Airport on the same night in case of delays or bad weather. Go for a stroll and take in what the city has to offer.

My friends and I really really ENJOYED this trip. Tour guide was amazing and every place we visited was shocking. I'd like to share it to my friends!

Our guide was simply amazing! He was kind, had a great sense of humor, knew so much about the culture and country, and adjusted according to the needs of the group. The tour included so many beautiful sights, and our guide adjusted the schedule and timing to meet the weather demands (that were many!) We had heavy snow, sleet, rain, sun, hail all within about a 30 minute time frame. Our guide made sure that we were able to get to the ice cave and glacier drive on the first day instead of the second due to a bad forecast on Day 2. Thank heaven he did that! The ice cave and our tour guide for that part of the trip were memorable and wonderful! We could not have asked for a better memory and guide to show us all the sights safely across the southern coast in March weather. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone!!

This was an amazing tour!! I highly recommend this tour. The ice caves were an amazing experience. I appreciated how the tour company adjusted based on the storm coming in and did not cut us short of anything. Our driver was very safe and concerned about getting us all safely back to Reykjavik. The hotel we spend the night in was great and the food excellent. Our tour guide was great! He spoke just enough to give us history and didn't overdo it. He was funny and entertaining and wanted us all to have a great experience. The ice caves, Diamond Beach and Glacier Lagoon were my highlights. I loved also it was a smaller group and not a bus of 100. Thank you, Sean and Aroura Hunters!

My husband and I went to Iceland for our honeymoon, and we booked this tour as a way to kick it off. This was such an amazing trip!! Our tour guide Thor, was outstanding, and kept us informed of landmarks while adding his personal touch of music! He kept the bus laughing and happy the entire ride! We got to stop at extra landmarks and had quality time at each place! If you’re going to Iceland, you need to go on this tour!! It’s not too expensive and you get so much out of it! Those ice caves were incredible, as were the stops to see the glacier lagoon, visit horses, and of course all the many waterfalls!! Thank you Thor, for such an amazing experience!!

Oskar, our tour guide was terrific, the sites were terrific, the ice cave was divine, everything was wonderful. He and the Cave tour guide communicated to rearrange our schedule to take advantage of the beautiful weather. So they were flexible and had our interests at heart. I'd highly recommend this trip. Your tour guide can make a huge difference, as we had a different guide for the Snaefellness Peninsula trip and he was more bus driver than excited, engaged guide. Oskar was full of information, had humor and even sang lullabies to us when we had a long drive ahead and time for a nap!

Oli was the best tour guide! He made the trip extra special with his wealth of information and extra stops along the way. We loved being in a small group (12 total) and were able to spend time learning about each other and enjoying the ride in addition to the sites. The ice caves were incredibly cool and unique, the glacier lagoon and diamond beach were spectacular to see, and our night in Höfn was the highlight when we got to see the Northern Lights. The accommodations were great as well (dinner, breakfast and the room were all great!). We loved this tour and highly recommend it. Definitely worth the time overnight to get out to the glacier and the lagoon!

Our guide Oli was wonderful. When he was notified that the ice cave wouldn’t be available the next morning as it was scheduled, he worked very hard to get us there the first day so that we would see it. He explained the need to skip the other activities planned for the first day, and told us that we would still see them, it would just be the second day. He gave us all advice about seeing the Northern Lights that was spot on! We saw an incredible show, even Oli said he hadn’t seen a show that good in several months. Since it was our only opportunity to see the lights in the entire week we were there, his advice proved invaluable.

Let me start by saying that I wish we were still on this tour. Rocky and Benni were excellent guides and drivers. We saw a lot on the first day, which made for a long daybut we would do it again in a hearbeat. We saw so much more than offered in the tour description. We had our three children who thoroughly enjoyed this tour and especially loved the lobster tails at Hotel Hofn at the end of the day. (Trust us, order the lobster tails and/or cod!) Benni safely drove us through several bouts of Icelandic rain/snow/ice/crizzle (as we call it in Colorado) and Rocky was an excellent guide. His narrative on the history and geography was awesome and well accompanied by his musical selections and well-timed humor! Our only complaint was that the minivan seating was a little tight and we would have liked to stay another 5-10 minutes in each site but you can't have it all and the tradeoff for the latter was to be able to see more (which included some non-agenda items that ended up being highlights for all of us). Highly recommend this tour. We'd take it again tomorrow if we weren't back in the US about to go back to work and school tomorrow! Pickup and drop off near our air bnb was timely and easy. We all loved this tour.

This was a perfect tour for the south coast and ice caving! Our guide Helka was wonderful, she kept us well informed of the landscape and history of the area. She communicated changes in our itinerary (due to weather) very clearly. The ice cave was amazing!

Reynir’s tour through the south coast of Iceland was incredible! From waterfalls, to ice caving, black sand beaches and glacier lagoon & diamond beach, it really opened our eyes to Iceland’s gorgeous landscapes! We were told we were super lucky with the weather, and it sure felt like it! It was gorgeous the entire time. it was so helpful to be guided around by a native, as he clearly knows and loves his country very much. Best way to start our trip - would definitely recommend for those looking for a holistic view of iceland!!
