Daily itinerary

Day 1 - The Golden Circle and Hekla Volcano

On this 5-Day Winter Tour you'll visit the Geysir geothermal area in Haukadalur valley.

You’ll get picked up at or near your accommodation in Reykjavík City, to meet and greet your guide and the rest of your travel companions. Then, it’s off to Iceland’s most esteemed sightseeing route of the Golden Circle.

First up is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site sitting at the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Prepare for a landscape torn apart by the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North-America; resulting in stunning fissures, gorges and moss-clad lava fields.

Following is the geothermal Geysir area in Haukadalur Valley, where you can witness first-hand the powers operating beneath this country’s young terrain, as the geyser Strokkur spews a boiling tower of water high up in the air at regular intervals.

Close to this valley of fumaroles and mud pots you’ll find the most iconic waterfall of Iceland, the beautiful Gullfoss, where it tumbles down two tiers into a grand canyon 30 metres (100 feet) below. After these primary sites, you’ll continue southeast through scenic areas of agriculture and farmlands.

You’ll spend your first night at a country hotel at the foot of Mt. Hekla, one of Iceland’s most notorious volcanoes.

Day 2 - South Coast Waterfalls and Skogar Museum

This 5-Day Winter Tour takes you to see some of Iceland's most stunning waterfalls.

On your second day, you’ll continue to the renowned attractions of the South Coast of Iceland. Your first stop will be at the Lava centre in Hvolsvöllur, where you’ll enjoy an interactive volcano presentation and earthquake exhibition.

Then, it’s off to see the two famous waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, both boasting a drop of 60 metres (200 feet). These falls are some of the most celebrated in the whole country, surrounded by pristine nature and steep coastal cliffs.

At the hamlet of Skógar, you’ll be visiting the folk museum Skógarsafn which will provide you with an insight into how Icelanders lived in the Settlement Age. Afterwards, it is off to the charming coastal village Vík, where you’ll witness the stretch of a massive lava field.

After a day filled with incredible natural sites and cultural attractions, you’ll settle into the country hotel which will serve as your home base for the next three days.

Day 3 - Vatnajokull National Park

Experience Iceland's beautiful vistas on this 5-Day Winter Tour.

On the third day of your winter excursion, you’ll be visiting Vatnajökull National Park, home to outlet glaciers, glacier lagoons, birch forests, steep mountains, beautiful waterfalls and untouched natural wilderness.

The hiking trails here are numerous, each more scenic than the other, so lace up your best boots and get ready to trek through the pristine landscapes of Europe’s second largest national park.

The highlights of today include the waterfall Skógafoss, surrounded by columns of black basalt; and Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland’s tallest peak at 2,110 metres (6,920 feet) above sea level.

If you opted to during your booking process, you can then expect to snap on your crampons and grab your axes to embark on a glacier walk; discovering a glistening blue world of ice formations and cracky crevasses.

After having filled your lungs with the freshest mountain air, you’ll return to your accommodation to turn in for the night, but not before looking up into the night sky for a chance display of the Aurora Borealis.

Day 4 - Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Farm Visit

See icebergs melting on the Diamond Beach in South Iceland on this 5-Day Winter Tour.

Today, get ready for glaciers as you’ll head east towards Öræfajökull, a magnificent ice cap that covers the country’s largest active volcano. Then, you’ll be crossing the stunning flatlands in front of Breiðamerkurjökull, before arriving at one of the most esteemed sites of the entire island, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

This otherworldly sight consists of massive icebergs floating on top of Iceland’s deepest lake, resulting in an ever-changing scenery of dreamlike tranquillity. Just a stone’s throw away, some of the bergs have washed ashore to glisten on a blanket of black sand, at a location aptly called the Diamond Beach.

Come afternoon, as you make your way back to your accommodation, you’ll be treated to visiting an authentic Icelandic sheep farm, to get to know the locals and their way of living. At nightfall, your day might just get capped off with a display of the Northern Lights.

Day 5 - Black Beach and Hot Spring Valleys

Take care of the powerful sneaker waves when you explore Reynisfjara black sand beach on the South Coast of Iceland.

On the last day of your South Iceland adventure, you’ll make your way back to the village of Vík to explore the famed black beach Reynisfjara better. Stay away from the powerful currents as you take in the stark beauty of this volcanic sand-strip, as the mighty ocean waves crash upon the eerie stone structures of the sea stacks Reynisdrangar.

On your way back to the capital, there will be ample time for one last adventure, as you’ll visit a gorgeous geothermal area north of the greenhouse village Hveragerði. Depending on the conditions at hand, you’ll be visiting either the valley of Reykjadalur to warm your bones in a natural hot spring, or hiking through Grændalur Valley to enjoy a panoramic scenery of steaming hot vents and sizzling fumaroles.

After having admired the contrast of a frozen surface and piping hot subterranean wonders, you’ll return to Reykjavík City and say your farewells, knowing you just spent the last five days exploring some of the most ethereal natural attractions of Iceland.
