Description

Come along on this tour of the lesser-known northern coast. While it has many of the same exciting geothermal features, waterfalls, rivers, valleys and hiking trails as the South Coast, it is often overlooked.

This tour offers a chance to see the Lake Mývatn area from the comfort of a powerful 4x4 Jeep/Van that can handle the toughest off-road terrain. You'll be picked up from your accommodation in Akureyri and drive along the coast of Eyjafjörður, the longest fjord in Iceland, surrounded by beautiful mountains and hills.

Your first stop will be Goðafoss, the waterfall of the gods, which features a stunning cascade that stretches nearly the entire length of the river. The massive quantities of water churned up by this waterfall make rainbows a common sight, to the delight of visitors.

You'll continue to Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe and the Lake Mývatn wetlands preserve which is home to thousands of birds each summer.

There are plenty of fascinating geological features to explore on your route, beginning with Hverarönd hot springs area near Námafjall mountain. This is an area so torn by the power beneath the earth's crust that it is important to stay on the marked path or you may get burned from the heat building under your feet.

You'll also visit Skútustaðagígar, an area of crags and craters created when a volcanic eruption spilt across the wetlands, exploding when the scalding lava came into contact with water from the lake.

You'll also explore the mysterious Dimmuborgir lava formations, which features arches and caves formed in the wake of yet another eruption. This place is so otherworldly that it is said you can find the Hidden People here. If a beautiful stranger offers you a magical banquet while you are enjoying the sights, do not eat it, for you may be cursed by the elves.

As a final treat on your return to Akureyri, the capital of the north, you'll stop to look out across the fjord at the city — a beautiful vista and a perfect spot for taking photos.
