Landmannalaugar is the official starting point for the famous Laugavegur Trek ranked among the "20 Best Hikes in the World" by National Geographic.

You will be hiking along Frostastadavatn Lakeside to the ill-named Ljótipollur (Ugly Puddle), an incredible red crater filled with bright-blue water. You will also have an opportunity to learn more about the most colourful volcano in Iceland, Brennisteinsalda, a feature covered in steaming vents and sulphur deposits, as well as climb Suðuhámur, a mountain found nearby to the dramatic Vondugil Canyon.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Frostastadavatn - Ljotipollur

An aerial view over the colourful and dramatic hillsides of the Central Highlands.

This 3-day tour begins at the Reykjavík tourist info booth at City Hall (Ráðhúsið), found just by Tjörnin pond in downtown. Pick up is at 7.00 a.m, so make sure not to be later. Ráðhúsið is within a quick walking distance from the majority of guesthouses and hotels in downtown Reykjavík.

After introductions, you will board the bus and be driven along the gorgeous South Coast of Iceland towards the hiker's paradise that is  Landmannalaugar. On the way, you will pass sweeping meadows, cascading waterfalls and rugged coastlines, all enjoyed from the comfort of the bus interior. You will also be driving through the beautiful Þjórsárdalur valley, named after the river Thjorsa, the longest river in Iceland, towards Hekla Volcano.

Passing extensive lava fields from previous eruptions, you will quickly approach the Landmannalaugar area with its stunning peaks and dramatic valleys.

After a spot of lunch here, you will set out on a 10 km hike to the ill-named Ljótipollur Lake, chosen as one of the World’s Most Beautiful Crater Lakes. Ljótipollur is an incredibly beautiful red crater filled with bright-blue water. After the hike, we will enjoy a rejuvenating bath at the natural steaming hot spring of Landamannalaugar, before making camp for the night.

Day 2 - Brennisteinsalda - Vondugil - Sudurnamur Rhyolite Mountain

The area surrounding Sudurnamur is one of authentic Icelandic beauty.

Today, you will hike up to Sudurnamur, a 200,000-year-old rhyolite mountain ridge.  Sudurnamur is rich in green and orange colour, making it a fantastic area to hike.

On the way up to the Sudurnamur, you will enjoy numerous ravines and colourful sights in the area, including a dramatic view of the "Landmannalaugar empire": Mt. Kirkjufell, Laugahraun lava, Blahnukur volcano and Brennisteinsalda, the most colourful mountain in Iceland.

The day is completely filled with stunning scenes of the Icelandic highlands. In the evening, you will have the final chance—at least for now—to soak in one of the region's hot springs before calling an end to the day.

Day 3 - Blahnukur Volcano BLAHNUKUR VOLCANO

The colours of Landmannalaugar truly defy the imagination.

After your breakfast buffet, you will continue the adventure by heading up to Blahnukur, a 60,000 years old volcano known for its bluish shades and vast body.

On the top of the mountain, you will have a chance to really appreciate the powerful effect of the geothermal activity on the landscape. Your guide will make sure to explain the fascinating science and history of this spectacular area.

The hiking trail leads up to the top of the mountain from which, in good conditions, you will get a fantastic view of multiple glaciers. Blahnukur is one of the best places to do some panoramic Landmannalaugar landscape photography.

After coming down, you will take a small break before boarding a bus back to Reykjavik. You will arrive at the city centre around 21:00 o’clock.
