Take a horseback ride from Reykjavík to the beautiful surrounding nature under the midnight sun. This tour should not be missed by any who appreciate spectacular landscapes and unique nature opportunities.
You'll be picked up from a prearranged meeting point in the evening, and taken to the stables on the outskirts of Reykjavík. Here, your guides will equip you with all the necessary riding equipment, before introducing you to your steed.
Icelandic horses are a particularly unique breed. Their size and sturdiness are their most notable features, but the more you get to know them, the more special you will see they are. They are sociable, curious and playful, and they love to interact with each other and with people.
You will be paired with an individual that suits your skill level. If you are a beginner, you'll get a small, very gentle individual who can be trusted to take good care of you. More expert riders will get more of a character, perhaps, but you will get an opportunity to pick up the pace on the journey.
Once you and your group are mounted, comfortable, and ready to go, you will set off through Rauðhólar, or Red Hills. They are named as such due to the high concentrations of iron within their rocks, dying them an unusual and interesting shade of crimson.
You'll then pass through the Heiðmörk Nature Reserve, a recreational area of birch forests, lava fields, mossy expanses and rivers. This route takes you to the lake Elliðavatn, a birdwatcher's paradise. Your guide will have brought you along a picnic, including Icelandic food and drink, that for half an hour you will enjoy on the banks.
After that, you will take a pleasant ride back to the riding centre in Reykjavík. A bar awaits, where you can enjoy a drink under the midnight sun before being transported back downtown.
