Discover the northern Christmas spirit, combined with a relaxing time and amazing nature dressed to impress in its wintery garb. This tour combines nature and landscape, from waterfalls and lava fields to myths of old. You'll travel in a small group in an SUV, for a full luxury experience, to some of Iceland's most beautiful sites accompanied by a professional guide for the whole duration of the tour.
You'll visit the Mývatn Nature baths for relaxation in the geothermal azure waters surrounded by amazing landscapes, visit the Christmas House and even meet Icelandic historical creatures, such as our Yule Lads and maybe even trolls, all accompanied by a local storyteller to guide you through your trip.
The tour starts in the morning when you are picked you up from your accommodation in Akureyri or the local airport. You'll then drive away from the town, on the east side of Eyjafjörður fjord, to the first stop of the day, the beautiful Goðafoss waterfall.
From there you will be driven to Lake Mývatn where you will find numerous sightseeing spots, like Dimmuborgir lava fields. There we will head out on foot to meet the yule lads, who wander around the area looking for people to chat and play games with. Then, to warm up, we will visit Grjótagjá hot spring and Námaskarð geothermal area.
Lake Mývatn is steeped in both history and folklore, from space explorations and Game of Thrones to trolls and yule lads. The landscapes around the lake itself are spectacular and form some of Iceland's most amazing geological features. Your local guide will tell you all about the stories and legends of the place as you explore the lands, offering a selection of Icelandic Christmas songs as you go.
After a long day of exploring and enjoying the nature and the amazing locations Mývatn has to offer, it is time to relax at the geothermal hot springs at Mývatn Nature Baths. A sister site to the Blue Lagoon, the Nature Baths are smaller and calmer, and much loved by locals. The warm water will soothe any aching muscles as you soak in the blue water, surrounded by lava, lake and volcanoes.
After towelling off, it is time to drive back to town. On the way, you'll make a stop in the Eyjafjörður area to visit the Christmas House to drink in the Yule spirit and drink in the smell and sights of true Christmas. After that, your guide will drive you back to Akureyri where you can enjoy the relaxing and cosy Christmas atmosphere that the 'Capital of the North' has to offer. Please dress according to weather conditions, warm inner layers and waterproof outer layers, as parts of the tour will take place outside and include walking. If you would rather rent swimsuits and towels, you can do so at the nature baths.
