Description

Be adventurous and explore the sites at and around Lake Mývatn in a super jeep. This is an exciting off road journey where you will get to follow some forgotten and unused trails around this region of geological and geothermal wonders.

During your trip, you will get to experience rough off roading, while witnessing incredible volcanoes and waterfalls. Your trained and friendly guides will take you to some of Mývatn's more known attractions such as, Dimmuborgir, Grjótagjá and Hverir, as well as some hidden ones.

Your first stop, however, will be at the magnificent waterfall Goðafoss, a site of great historic importance. This is approximately halfway between the lake and Akureyri, the town where you will be picked up.

After marvelling over this feature, and learning all about it, you will reach the Mývatn region and visit Skútustaðagígar, a cluster of very unique pseudo craters, formed during a eruption in the area. This type of land formation has only been found in three locations in Iceland, and are only common in places as literally otherworldly as the planet Mars.

The next stop will be  Dimmuborgir, an unusually dark and rough lava field which contains many volcanic caves and strange formations. Game of Thrones scenes North of the Wall have been shot here.

Your guides will then take you off-road, through the deep snow towards the volcanoes Hverfjall and Lúden. From here, you will take a secret passage to Hverir following a long forgotten trail.

Hverir is a geothermal area with countless hot springs and steam vents dyed a variety of different colours. From here, you'll go over Námaskarð Pass to Grjótagjá. Grjótagjá is a small lava cave near lake Mývatn with a thermal spring inside. This was also used in Game of Thrones, and will be instantly recognisable to fans of the series.

After enjoying these sites, you'll return to Akureyri.

Hop aboard for this off-road adventure. Check availability by choosing a date.
