Discover the magical red lava hills of Raudholar by horseback with this fantastic 3.5-hour guided tour. This journey is perfect for those seeking adventure, incredible landscapes, and a classic Iceland experience on the doorstep of Reykjavik.
You’ll start this unique trip by meeting your guides at the stables on the verge of Raudholar. This area in Southwest Iceland is a short drive from most hotels in the capital, though you can also add a transfer service during the booking process for added convenience.
Once your guides have introduced themselves to the riding group, they’ll provide you with overalls, helmets, and boots before introducing you to the horses.
Icelandic horses are unique, beautiful animals. They are most noticeably smaller than most other breeds, but after a few minutes with them, you’ll soon see they are friendlier, more intelligent, and more curious.
You will be paired with a horse that suits your stature and experience, and you will have the chance to get comfortable on it before you are led into the red lava hills of Raudholar.
This area is defined by its dramatic, colorful red sands and rocks, which form a Martian landscape that seems out of this world. The unique coloration and surprising shapes of the hills and cliffs were created by volcanic eruptions that occurred around 5,000 years ago.
You’ll travel through this breathtaking, unique area, feeling like one of Iceland’s first settlers, and your guide may tell you about the surrounding nature and its associated folklore. These tales add to the already noticeable air of mystery and magic for which Raudholar is renowned.
After a while, the red hills will dissipate for more traditional Icelandic scenery, with rolling landscapes surrounded by dramatic mountains and terrain carved by rivers. At the height of summer, expect beautiful greenery, wildflowers, and maybe even some local birdlife.
On the paths here, you will try the ‘tolt,’ a gait unique to the Icelandic horse that helps them travel through deep snow and along slopes. Though developed for the harsh landscapes, it is surprisingly comfortable for the rider despite its speed.
Though this tour does not necessarily require you to be an expert rider, it is still designed for those with extensive riding experience and adventurous travelers who seek excitement in nature.
After around three hours, you’ll return to the stable. Here, you’ll have some downtime to enjoy coffee with your guides and other guests and ask any remaining questions you might have about the famous Icelandic breed.
