Top things to do in Iceland
Book your complete trip with the best companies only
Set out on a private adventure from Reykjavik to marvel over the sites of the Golden Circle without other tourists impacting your experience with this personalized excursion. Those eager to marvel over the best locations in the country will love this intimate trip.
You’ll begin the tour when you and your group of eight or less are picked up from a meeting point right by your accommodation. There is no waiting around for other travelers, and you’ll set out to immediately start your sightseeing journey.
After passing through some charming towns, by some beautiful coast, and through a landscape of farmland, lava fields, and mountains, you’ll come to Thingvellir National Park. This marvelous place of forests and waterways is located directly between two clearly prominent tectonic plates and a great place to explore. History buffs will also enjoy the signs documenting Thingvellir’s millennium of dramatic events, such as political meetings, clan clashes, and witch trials.
From Thingvellir, you’ll continue to witness the eruptions of Strokkur, a geyser in the Geysir Geothermal Area. Though it dramatically erupts every five to ten minutes to enormous heights, you can fill the time in between easily as you marvel over the vibrantly colored earth dyed by geothermal forces and the surrounding hot springs.
Close to Geysir, you’ll find a dramatic gorge tearing through stunning landscapes, and within it, Gullfoss waterfall. This powerful example of Iceland’s majesty tumbles dramatically in two tiers, throwing off blooms of spray and many rainbows if the sun shines upon it. Whether marveling over it in summer, when it is fullest, or winter, when it is caked in ice, Gullfoss never fails to impress.
Though most tours end here, you will have three bonus sites. You’ll get to experience the rural culture at Efstidalur dairy farm, the hot springs at Laugarvatn, and the crater lake of Kerid. The latter is most impressive due to its scale, the contrast between its red rocks and blue waters, and the fact that you can walk all around and within it.
As this is a private tour, you can organize additional activities for your day, such as snowmobiling and hot spring bathing, to enjoy before going back to Reykjavik.
