Combine two essential Icelandic experiences; hike a glacier, and marvel over the Northern Lights. This private tour, which includes a traditional two-course dinner, should not be missed by those who want to pack as many winter activities into their holiday as possible, nor those who like a bit of luxury.

You will be picked up from your Reykjavík hotel around midday, before being taken on a journey along the South Coast. This is one of Iceland’s most picturesque settings; you will pass lava fields, black sand coastlines, waterfalls and volcanoes, including Eyjafjallajökull, which erupted in 2010.

Your destination is Sólheimajökull, an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. This ice cap is a beautiful site, especially in winter. The fresh ice that clads it is an electric blue, and the new snow a gleaming white.

Your guide will introduce you to the safety rules and equipment before leading you up to the glacier tongue. As soon as you start your ascent, you will no doubt be mesmerised by the beautiful crevasses, towering ridges, and vivid colouration. For two hours, you will explore the many wonders of the ice cap. After taking as many photos as you need, your guide will lead you back to the van.

Before hunting for the Northern Lights, you will head to Skógafoss, an awe-inspiringly powerful waterfall. There is a restaurant on site where you can enjoy traditional, two-course Icelandic meal while admiring the cascade. This dinner is included in the tour.

When everyone is full and satisfied, you’ll begin your search for the auroras. Your guide will be searching for the areas with the least cloud cover, where they know you’ll have a great vantage point without too many crowds around you.

Watching the Northern Lights descend and dance is an otherworldly experience. Most of the time, they are green, but occasionally, you’ll also see purple, reds, blues and pinks. Thankfully, your guide is an expert in catching them on camera and can help you adjust your settings to allow you to get some pictures. After a hopefully incredible show, you will return to your accommodation in Reykjavík.

Hike a glacier and watch the auroras, with this private winter day tour. Check availability by choosing a date.
