Description

See the country’s most adorable creature, the North Atlantic Puffin, as you cruise Breiðafjörður Bay on a traditional oak fishing boat. This puffin tour around Melrakkaey Island is perfect for all nature lovers who are travelling the Snæfellsnes peninsula and want to add an adventure to their holiday.

At the town of Grundarfjörður, you will board a traditional Icelandic fishing boat and head on out to sea. You will get to discover the rich and spectacular wildlife of Snæfellsnes as you sail towards the small and uninhabited island of Melrakkaey.

Located just off the shores of Grundarfjörður, this lush island is edged by white cliffs of basalt rocks. Several species of nesting birds make Melrakkaey its home and to preserve the pure nature, the island is now protected as a nature reserve.

Perching on the island’s cliffs, you will find the charming puffins. Due to their distinctive look, and the black 'jacket' on their backs, locals have a nickname for the bird: 'Prófasturinn' - The Preacher Man. With a black crown and back; pale grey cheeks; orange legs and boldly marked red and black beak, these beautiful birds spend most of their life on the open ocean, only coming to shore annually to find a mate and nest.

On the island, you will also find other species of birds, such as Glaucous Gulls, the second biggest species of gulls found in Iceland; the looming and dark Cormorants, and Eiders, large and stunning sea-ducks.

You will cruise around the island, enjoying not only in the rich birdlife but also the stunning landscape around. Dominating the scenery is Kirkjufell Mountain, arguably the most beautiful mountain on Snæfellsnes peninsula, as well as being the most photographed mountain in Iceland.

This tour is every nature photographer’s dream, and you will be given plenty of opportunities to capture the breathtaking landscape and abundant wildlife of the Snæfellsnes peninsula on film.
