Experience the beauty of the countryside from the back of an exceptional Icelandic horse.
This is a ride to suit both novices and more experienced riders. We ride at a leisurely tölt – the smooth running gait characteristic of the Icelandic horse – from the farm of Kálfholt along the banks of the mighty Þjórsá river.
We’ll be surrounded by breathtaking mountain landscapes, with the accompaniment of the burbling of the river flowing by. We’ll see fields of graceful mares, powerful stallions, and this year’s long-legged foals – all adding up to an unforgettable experience. The ride is followed by home-baked treats back at the farm.
The Icelandic horse is a unique breed, known for its intelligence and curiosity. You’ll be charmed by their friendly, inquisitive nature. They were brought to Iceland by the first settlers and have adapted to the sometimes harsh climate and terrain of the island. Today, they are known for their specialized gaits - five of them, while most other horse breeds have only three.
Kálfholt farm is a family-run horse breeding facility located between the towns of Selfoss and Hella in South Iceland, on the eastern banks of the Þórsá river. The farm has been in the family since 1965 and in 1985 began to focus exclusively on breeding top quality Icelandic horses.
Today the farm boasts about 100 horses, several of which have gone on to become national champions in many competitions around the country.
The breeding and training is carried out by the whole family and plays a large role in the daily activities of Kálfholt. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the stables and meet some of the horses.
