Skaftafell Flight and Local Guide Glacier Experience

Skaftafell Flight and Local Guide Glacier Experience
New ice caves form within Iceland's glaciers every winter, then melt away with the coming summer.
Stepping into one of Skaftafell's famous ice caves is like stepping into another world all together.
Make sure you're fully prepared with warm layers, gloves and hats to ensure your time on the glacier is enjoyable.
From the sky, you will have an incredible perspective over some of Iceland's most beautiful features.
Exploring Iceland's ice caves might require a little climbing and clambering.
From the sky, you'll gain a real insight into just isolated Icelandic infrastructure can be.

Experience two wonders in one: a flightseeing tour above this incredible land and a trip onto the ancient ice of the glacier Svínafellsjökull. On this tour, you will see as much of Iceland as is possible in a day, while also getting a fantastic introduction to glacier hiking.

This trip starts with you catching your flight from Reykjavík airport. The flight from the south-west of the country to the south-east covers a vast diversity of scenery that is marvellous to witness from above.

The black sand beaches of the South Coast, the stretches of barren desert, the mountains that lead into the Highlands, Iceland’s largest natural lake Þingvellirvatn, and even the glacier that erupted in 2010, Eyjafjallajökull, will all unfold beneath you. You will then fly into Skaftafell Nature Reserve, to a small airstrip, where your experienced glacier guides will be waiting for you.

After introductions, they will take you to Svínafellsjökull, a tongue stretching from Europe’s largest glacier, the vast Vatnajökull ice cap. Here, you will be helped into your gear, as you are informed of the safety procedures and ground rules of glacier hiking. Without further ado, you will be given an ice axe and can start your 1.5 km excursion up the glacier.

Your experience on the otherworldly, ancient ice will no doubt stay with you for life. Not only will the dramatic sights take your breath away, but the almost organic sounds of the glacier changing beneath your feet is mesmerising.

Depending on the time of year that you come, the glacier will appear different; in winter, many parts are a stunning electric blue, so vivid it’s hard to imagine how the colour is natural. In summer, more of it is a milky white, and veined with the black ash of volcanic eruptions dating back centuries.

Svínafellsjökull is part of the Vatnajökull National Park, and the incredible surrounding nature has a fascinating story; needless to say, your guide will point out the natural and historic features of the glacier and surrounding landscapes as you hike.

For this tour, it is possible to be a first-time glacier-hiker. All you have to bring is decent hiking shoes with ankle support, warm, waterproof clothing, and a sense of adventure. Everything else is provided. You may also wish to take a camera with you, to capture the wonderful memories you will make here.

Following the hike, you will return to the airstrip and fly back to Reykjavík, returning in time to have a full evening back in the capital. If the weather limited your views on the flight over, you have a second opportunity to see the wonders of the south coast on your return journey.

Don’t miss this incredible chance, to see a huge wealth of Icelandic scenery from a unique perspective and to adventure on the ancient ice of an awe-inspiring glacier. Check availability by choosing a date.
