Description

A visit to Iceland is not complete without witnessing one of the country's mighty glaciers.

Join this small group glacier hiking tour and explore the power of glaciers in Iceland. Your guide is a qualified and experienced Icelandic mountain guide and will take you on this visit to Sólheimajökull glacier.

Sólheimajökull is located on the South Coast of Iceland, near Skógarfoss waterfall. Sólheimajökull is between 8-11 kilometres in length and 1-2 kilometres in width. As with all the glaciers in Iceland, this glacier is rapidly receding, due to global warming.

Sólheimajökull is a glacier outlet which originates from the mighty Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Mýrdalsjökull is the fourth biggest glacier in Iceland, covering 590 square kilometres. At it's tallest point, it is around 740 meters. Beneath Mýrdalsjökull rests the famous volcano, Katla.

Katla has erupted roughly every 80 - 100 years. The last time Katla erupted was back in 1918.

Your tour will start at Sólheimajökull parking lot. There, you will meet your guide. They will explain what you can expect from the day before you set off towards the glacier.

From the parking lot to the base of the glacier, the walk is around 15-20 minutes. The trail is quite pleasant, and this is an excellent opportunity to take some photos of the glacier.

You will stop at its base, where your guide will teach you some skills so that you can walk safely and comfortably on the ice.

On this tour, you can expect to explore the mighty Sólheimajökull glacier. Your guide will go over the history of the glacier and explain the crevasses, seracs and other features. Your guide will also show you some of the most stunning places on the glacier, where you can look out on incredible views.

You will spend roughly 3-4 hours on this tour.

This is an introductory tour, so it is a relatively easy glacier hike which will be suitable for most people who are in good health.
