Description

Join this immersive tour of one of Iceland’s most beautiful and popular regions, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Often nicknamed ‘Iceland in Miniature’, this tour should not be missed by those who want to pack as many diverse features and landscapes into a day as possible.

The tour begins when your friendly, knowledgeable guides pick you up from Reykjavík in a comfortable minibus and drive you north along the Ring Road. Your first stop with be Lake Selvallavatn, a serene viewing point from which you can look upon the range of beautiful mountains that run along the length of the peninsula. There is also a hidden waterfall here that your guides will show you too.

Next will be a visit to the largest settlement of the peninsula, the historic fishing town of Stykkishólmur, where you will learn a little about Icelandic culture. You’ll also enjoy lunch at one of the peninsula’s best-loved restaurants, Narfeyrarstofan, which utilises locally sourced produce from Breiðarfjörður bay and the surrounding farms.

Mount Kirkjufell is next on the agenda, which Game of Thrones fans will recognise as the dagger-shaped mountain seen in a vision in Season Seven. Aside from its television fame, it is known as a beautiful, dramatic peak throughout the year and a favourite destination for photographers. You’ll get to admire it from its adjacent waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss.

Your guides will then take you to the black sand beach, Djúpalónssandur. As beautiful as this stretch is, it is best known for being home to the ‘lifting stones’, which fishermen of old would test their strength against to check their suitability to the sea. They are still here for you to see how you would have fared.

From here, you will enter the Snæfellsjökull National Park, home to the beautiful, twin-peaked glacier and volcano of the same name. Avid readers will recognise this as the setting for Jules Verne’s ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ and Halldor Laxness’ ‘Under the Glacier’.

You’ll round the tip of the peninsula on which the glacier is situated, and next arrive at the basalt fortress, Lóndrangar, and witness its great scale and resident birds.

Finally, you will visit two cultural villages: Arnarstapi has a fascinating history and beautiful coastal geology, and Buðir has long been abandoned but for a lonely yet picturesque church.

The journey back to Reykjavík will be defined by its beautiful seascapes and mountain views; you will arrive back in the capital in time for dinner.

Hop aboard this excellent tour around the beautiful sites of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Check availability by choosing a date.
