There is plenty of time to be blown away by the secret world that exists beneath your feet. You will walk along a path traveled by the lava of an eruption through the area some 5,200 years ago. Raufarhólshellir also has a beautiful colouration from the minerals that rose from the earth when it was formed, sure to push you into a state of wonder. If you visit the cave in winter, then you will find it even more breathtaking, as it becomes adorned with fascinating ice formations, hanging from the ceiling and twisting up from the ground.
You will traverse along the recently constructed footbridge from viewing platform to viewing platform, meaning that, unlike in other caves, there is no need for climbing. The ceiling of the cave is also up to 10 meters (33 ft) high, so there is no need for crawling either.
This means that the tour is accessible for people of all ages and abilities; only those with serious back, neck or knee issues may want to practice caution. Those who avoid dark confined spaces also need not fear, as the tunnel is lit throughout with award winning lighting, and far more roomy than most other caves.
The meeting point for this tour is just a thirty-minute drive from Reykjavík, close to the geothermal hotspot town of Hveragerði. Tours from here start every hour, from morning to late afternoon, and last for 50-60 minutes.
