The South Coast in a Minibus

Based on 1 traveller reviews

Experience a wealth of natural beauty with this personal minibus tour around the South Coast of Iceland. This tour covers a variety of rivers, waterfalls, mountains and glaciers, and is sure to provide a lifetime of holiday memories! Do not forget your camera!

You will begin your tour by heading out East from Reykjavik, along Route 1 (the Ring Road), soon emerging into a landscape of austere volcanic foothills and surreal steam vents. Passing through the town of Hveragerði, you will quickly swoop through a flat and wide coastal plain, full of verdant horse farms and greenhouses.

After the towns of Hella and Hvolsvöllur, the landscape begins to change to jagged rock formations, black gravel and mossy fields. Mountains wreathed in mist thrust upwards on the inland side, including Eyjafjallajökull volcano, whilst enormous rivers such as the Þjórsá cut and permeate their way to the black-sand beaches of the South Coast. All of this makes for an incredibly beautiful ride.

The majestic Seljalandsfoss is the first stop-off of the day. Seljalandsfoss is one of those rare examples of a waterfall where it is possible to walk behind the cascading water, a unique experience in itself. From Seljalandsfoss, you will keep heading east along the South Coast, making your way towards the black volcanic beach of Reynisfjara and Dyrhólaey.

Along this beach lies the coastal village of Vik where you can look out to the crooked basalt obelisks, Reynisdrangar, jutting outward from the Atlantic ocean. From Vík, you begin your gradual return to Reykjavik, with a few interesting stops along the way.

The first of these is at the base of the incredible Sólheimsjökull glacier. Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier from Mýrdalsjökull, the 4th largest glacier in Iceland. Outlet glaciers are channels of ice that flow out of ice sheets, ice caps or icefields, but are constrained on the sides with exposed bedrock. You will walk from the parking lot to the glacier's edge, so worthy hiking boots are highly recommended. On the way to Reykjavík from Sólheimajökull glacier, your final stop will be by the magnificent Skógafoss waterfall.

Tour guide was very good and very knowledgeable. We got to see all the main attractions and the guide got out of the bus walked with us to all of them. The highlight was walking up to the glacier, the guide would bring us as far as he though was safe. The Only problem with the trip was the pick up times were misleading . Waited an hour for the tour guide. The pick up time said 8.30 but then down further it said pick up starts half an hour before the tour starts. So we were waiting for the tour since 8 and got picked up at 9. We had the mini bus to ourselves so we got around a lot faster then we would have if the bus was full or if we went with one of the big bus companies. Would definitely recommend a mini bus tour.
