Description

Experience the highs and lows of life as a Viking with this exceptionally entertaining and educational cultural tour delving into the fascinating history of Iceland's earliest settlers. This is the perfect tour for enthusiastic history buffs, as well as those would like to learn more about this thrilling and bloody Age.

At the beginning of your day, you will head out towards Iceland's only UNESCO World Heritage site, Þingvellir National Park. Not only is Þingvellir visually spectacular, with moss-laden volcanic plateaus and towering tectonic plates, but it also holds an important place in Iceland history.

It was here, in 930 AD, that what was arguably the first democratically elected parliament in the world was formed, the Alþingi. Icelanders would congregate here for over 800 years to discuss legislation, pass judgement and birth the planet's youngest nation.

The next stop is a reconstructed, traditional farmstead found in  Stöng, Þjórsárdalur. This reconstruction is based on the designs of a Commonwealth Era settlement, providing visitors with a real insight into what rural life must have been like in pre-modern Iceland. It is believed that the original farmstead was destroyed in the Hekla eruption in the year 1104 AD.

Next, you will be taken deep into the literary landscapes of Njáls Saga, arguably Iceland's most important historical document. Sagas such as these were written in Icelandic convents and monasteries in the 13th Century by monks and intellectuals of the time.

As the day begins to draw to a close, you will make a visit to the Turf House Museum, an excellent spot to learn even more about the daily life of the Vikings. You will conclude the tour with dinner at Fjörukráin restaurant, an authentically Icelandic establishment.

Hesitate no longer! Book your chance to gain a real insight into the fascinating history of the Viking Age in Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.
