Description

Go on an adventure with your family and friends with this four-hour glacier hike of the Vatnajokull National Park from Skaftafell. If you want an easy but thrilling hike at one of the largest glaciers in the world, this Vatnajokull National Park tour is perfect for you.

The tour begins at the base of Vatnajokull glacier, at the Skaftafell hotel park, where your group will meet your experienced and certified guide. Your guide will give you a briefing about the tour and some safety tips you need to know to make it an unforgettable experience.

Before starting the adventure, you’ll get the necessary equipment for glacier hiking, such as crampons, a mountain axe, a harness, and a helmet. On your part, wear a warm and waterproof jacket, soft-shell or outdoor pants, sturdy boots, gloves, sunglasses, and a hat.

You should also bring sunblock, as sunlight reflects off the glacier, and some snacks to keep you energized during the hike.

This Skaftafell tour is easy, and a prior glacier hiking experience is not required. Kids as young as eight-years-old can join the excursion. Moreover, since this is a small group tour, you’re assured of having an excellent time.

Vatnajokull is the largest glacier in Iceland and all of Europe. In particular, it already makes up eight percent of the country’s total landmass. Due to its large size, Vatnajokull boasts more than 30 outlet glaciers or smaller glaciers that flow out from the main ice cap.

For this tour, you’ll specifically traverse the Falljokull outlet glacier. This outlet glacier is near your starting point and is known for its dramatic ice formations and landscapes.

During your hike, you’ll enjoy incredible views of your surroundings and may even see an ice cave beneath the glacier. The ice caves in Vatnajokull are famous for their blue and glass-like walls. Although you won’t be able to go inside the caves, you may have the chance to peek into them when you see one.

It is worth noting that the ice you’ll be walking on during your hike is old and ranges between 400 to 1,000 years old. Moreover, if you want to learn more about Falljokull and Vatnajokull, feel free to ask your guide about them.

You can also take a picture of the breathtaking landscapes of Vatnajokull and bring it back home for remembrance.

The tour ends after four hours once you return to your meeting place. The tour does not include a pickup and drop-off service, so make sure to arrange your transportation before starting the tour.

Embark on an easy but breathtaking adventure hike atop the Vatnajokull National Park, and see the dramatic glaciers and landscapes of Falljokull. Check availability now by choosing a date.
