Visit the glaciers of South Iceland and hike on one of them with this thrilling super jeep excursion. This tour is perfect for those who want to spice up a classic South Coast tour.
You’ll be picked up in Reykjavík by a specially modified vehicle; super jeeps are not just perfect for reaching hard-to-access places, but ensure that you will not be overcrowded with other guests, and can have a personal time with your expert guide.
Your first destination is in the direction of Eyjafjallajökull glacier. While from the ring-road, this is quite a hard feature to see, you will take an off-road track that will expose it to you in all its glory. This was the peak that erupted in 2010, causing problems with air traffic across Europe.
You will skim by Þórsmörk, a beautiful forested valley of such dramatic vistas it was named after the Norse God of Thunder, Thor (Þór), until reached Gígjökull, a tongue of Eyjafjallajökull. Your guide will be able to point at its features, and those in the surrounding area, to help you see how the eruption occurred and how the lava flowed.
After this, you will return to the ring road, and head to the next glacier to the east, Mýrdalsjökull. This covers another notorious volcano, Katla. You will not be heading there, however; your destination is the outlet Sólheimajökull, which is the glacier you will be hiking upon.
Your guide will cover the safety rules and gear you up in your helmet and crampons before you start your exploration. Glacier hiking is truly one of Iceland’s greatest tours; in few places around the world can you see such wide snowscapes, incredible ice formations, and spectacular surrounding views.
You will have an hour and a half to make the most of this beautiful location, before returning to your super jeep. The tour is not quite over yet, however; on your way back to Reykjavík, you will stop at the waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
Immerse yourself in the volcanoes, glaciers and waterfalls of Iceland’s South Coast. Check availability by choosing a date.
