Daily itinerary

Day 1
Perhaps the most unique perspective in Iceland, looking up from the base of a volcano's crater.

Day 1 - Inside the Volcano

The very first tour of this combo is one of the most authentic Icelandic experiences available - entering the vast and dramatic caldera of the dormant volcano, Þríhnúkagígur. Iceland is the only location on the planet where it is possible to gain this unique perspective and stand where the boiling lava once bubbled.

You will set out from the capital city towards the Blue Mountains, Bláfjöll, the tour’s meeting point. After friendly introductions to your guide and the rest of the group, you will begin a 2-mile (3.2km) hike to the volcano, passing a wealth of beautiful scenery as you do.

Upon arrival at the crater, you will be fitted with all necessary safety equipment for your descent into the crater. Equipped with your harness and a helmet, you will enter the volcano’s ready-made lift, then drop gently into a glittering, subterranean world. Almost immediately, you will be in awe of the kaleidoscopic colors that are left imprinted into the chamber walls.

The lift journey to the bottom will take approximately 6 minutes, covering a 394-feet (120-meter) descent. Once at the base, you will fully appreciate the scale of the caldera and witness the impressive volcanic sculptures on display. This is one place that you won’t want to forget your camera!

After your exploration has come to an end, you will ride the crater lift back to the volcano summit. Before hiking back down to your own vehicle, you will be invited to indulge in some fresh Icelandic soup, as well as other refreshments and snacks. Once your time at the volcano is over, you can continue on your journey around the country.

Day 2
Snorkelling in Silfra is one of Iceland's most popular activities.

Day 2 - Snorkelling in Silfra Fissure

On your second day, you will make your way to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of Iceland's parliament. Once there, you will pull up in the car park of Silfra Fissure and meet your friendly and experienced snorkeling guides, as well as other excited members of your group.

Your guide will offer a ten-minute safety and educational briefing on the task at hand, taking you through each piece of equipment before further detailing why this snorkeling spot is one of the most unique in the world. For this experience, you need to be comfortable in the water and be able to swim.

When the briefing is over, you will be helped into all of the kits you need for thermal protection in the water; drysuit, neoprene hoods and gloves, fins, and of course, your mask and snorkel.

You will be taken down to the entrance point, where you will descend a steel staircase into the glistening glacier water below. Upon taking your first look beneath the surface, you will quickly realize just why this site is so popular; the visibility of Silfra's glacial water often exceeds 100m, meaning you will have a full, panoramic view over this mighty blue canyon.

At the end of your tour, you will dress out of your kit and help yourself to some soothing hot chocolate. Afterward, you are free to explore Þingvellir National Park further, head back to Reykjavík, or venture further east on your exploration of Iceland.

Day 3
Your glacier hike might also include a spot of climbing with ice axes.

Day 3 - Glacier Hiking on Solheimajokull

Day 3 and, arguably, your most exciting day in Iceland yet! Today, you will head out along the picturesque South Coast, one of the most popular sightseeing stretches in the country, to take part in glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull ice cap.

You will arrive at Sólheimajökull car park, where you will quickly meet the rest of your hiking party, as well as your experienced glacier guide. Without further ado, together, you will make the short, fifteen-minute walk to the base of the ice cap.

Once there, your guide will offer a short lesson on walking on the ice and hand out all of the equipment you'll need for a comfortable trek. When everyone is kitted up with helmets and crampons, you will begin your ascent up this glittering Icelandic giant.

Throughout the hike, you will be privy to stunning glacial features - deep blue moulins, staggering white crevasses, and a wealth of naturally formed ice sculptures. Looking up close, you will even be able to detect the pockets of oxygen that are still trapped from thousands of years ago beneath the ice's cool surface.

At the height of the glacier, you will be welcomed by stunning, 360-degree views over the South Coast region. On bright days, you will even have a clear look at the mighty stratovolcano and glacier Eyjafjallajökull, famous for the 2010 eruption that shut down air traffic over mainland Europe that year.

At the end of your hike, you will descend the glacier back to its base, then make the short return journey back to Sólheimajökull glacier car park. From there, you are free to continue back to Reykjavik, check out other attractions on the South Coast, or continue east to see what else Iceland has on offer.
