Enjoy the nature and culture of north Iceland with this tour tailored to those arriving to Akureyri by cruise ship. This excursion is perfect for travellers seeking a unique experience in this beautiful part of the country.

This experience will begin shortly after you arrive at Akureyri’s beautiful port, where your guide will meet you and your group. From there, you will set out into the beautiful landscapes of north Iceland towards your first destination of the day, Goðafoss Waterfall. This feature is incredibly beautiful and can be admired from many angles; it is best known, however, for its fascinating history.

Back in 1000 AD, under threat of invasion from the newly devout Norway, Iceland abandoned its belief in the Old Norse Gods and accepted Christianity as the official religion of the Commonwealth. To symbolise and cement this change, the Lawspeaker of the time threw idols of the pagan deities - of Þór and Óðin, for example - into the rapids here. This explains the translation of Goðafoss’ name; it means ‘the Waterfall of the Gods’.

From here, you will head to a lesser-known but no less spectacular waterfall, Aldeyjarfoss, which sits just before the northern edges of the Icelandic Highlands. While this feature does not have as interesting a history as its neighbour, it is renowned for the perfectly formed hexagonal basalt columns that surround it.

After these two beautiful natural sites, you’ll head to Kaffi Kú, or the Cowshed Café, at Garður farm by the fjord of Eyjafjörður for a bite to eat. This is a unique location, as the excellent restaurant has glass viewing points where you can overlook the animals and a monitor screen where you can observe the workings of the farm, such as the milking of the cows.

After you have eaten, you are welcome to head to the barn to meet some of the adorable calves and to have a little wander around the surrounding countryside.

Once you and your group are well-fed and acquainted with the animals, you’ll head to the Christmas Garden and Christmas House, just on the outskirts of Akureyri, where the Yuletide is celebrated year-round. Here, you can find (and buy) festive decorations from around the world, browse local handicrafts, eat treats usually saved until December, listen to Christmas music, climb a fairytale tower and explore the tranquil gardens.

With these natural and cultural sites explored and enjoyed, your guide will whisk you back to the port in Akureyri, in good time for your departure.
