Description

Hop aboard for two of Iceland’s most popular winter activities, of both whale watching and Northern Lights hunting from a boat. This adventure should not be missed by any lovers of wildlife who want a chance to see the ethereal Aurora from the open seas.

Your adventure starts from Reykjavík’s Old Harbour in the city centre, where your whale watching vessel awaits. On the following 3-4 hour cruise around Faxaflói bay, your expert guide will provide you with in-depth information about the surrounding landscapes and the magnificent marine animals of the bay.

The most common species of whale in our waters are Minke Whales, White-beaked Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises and Humpback Whales. You can also expect to witness rich birdlife such as Arctic terns, Guillemots, Cormorants and many more.

You return to the harbour area in the afternoon, in good time to have dinner and prepare for the electrifying Northern Lights hunt. All guests get a discount at a nearby harbour restaurant which they can make use of, or they can use their free voucher to explore the Whale Exhibition Centre.

The evening voyage departs begins when night has fallen. Meet the crew in the Visitor Centre and prepare for an unforgettable experience. Once you've boarded the boat, you can stay inside the heated indoor cabin or get warmed up in comfortable overalls and head upstairs to the main deck to get ample views of the vast starry sky.

Leaving behind the bright city lights, you start the search. Your excellent guide will tell you all about the Auroras and how they form, and if you have any questions or need help setting up your camera gear, please don’t hesitate to contact the crew. You can expect to be back in the city a couple of hours later, or around midnight.

Sighting success is quite high and to optimise your chances your guides carefully go over the weather-, cloud- and sea conditions beforehand. However, in the unlikely event that you don’t see any wildlife or Auroras on the tours, you will receive a free ticket to try again on a different night.

Don't hesitate in jumping aboard and exploring the wonders off the coast of Reykjavík, from the gentle giants swimming below to the majestic Northern Lights dancing above. Check availability by choosing a date.
