Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to the Eastfjords

5-Day East Iceland Adventure | Local Experience

Your Eastfjords adventure begins as you get picked up in Egilsstaðir, either at the domestic airport, or your accommodation if you’re already staying in this charming town of the East.

First up is a short tour around the town, followed by a scenic drive leading to the beautiful waterfall Hengifoss, one of the highest falls in the entire country with a narrow cascade of 128 metres (420 feet).

Next up is a visit to the Icelandic Wilderness Center, the gateway to the Highlands, where different exhibitions provide an intriguing insight into local culture and nature. Then, it’s off to the visitor centre of Vatnajökull National Park, but you are situated on the eastern front of this most voluminous and majestic of all Icelandic glaciers.

After an exciting first day, you’ll return to Egilsstaðir where you can take a dip at the local geothermal swimming pool before turning in for the night.

Day 2 - In the Footsteps of Elves

5-Day East Iceland Adventure | Local Experience

On your second day, you’ll be driving to the quaint village known as Borgarfjörður eystri. Approximately 100 inhabitants reside here and fishing, along with farming, are the village’s main breadwinners.

You’ll visit one of the local farms, where you will be greeted with open arms, enabling you an authentic glimpse into Icelandic farm living.

This territory is furthermore known to inhabit an abundance of elves and hidden folk, so get ready for a magnificent mountain hike to explore the whereabouts of these creatures of folklore better.

At the end of the day, you’ll be transported to a cosy guesthouse in the area, where you can relax or take an evening stroll before settling in for the night.

Day 3 - Horses and Black Sands

5-Day East Iceland Adventure | Local Experience

Leaving Borgarfjörður eystri on day three, you’ll be visiting a local horse farm in the area, where you can meet and greet the friendly Icelandic horse, but these beloved animals have lived here in isolation since the Settlement of the island.

For those interested, you can opt to go horseback riding, but this ancient travel method is probably the most authentic way to experience the beautiful wilderness of Iceland.

Then, it’s time to make your way south, passing magnificent fjord landscapes en route, stopping at another geothermal swimming pool to soothe your muscles from the horse riding and hiking.

Eventually, you’ll arrive in the town of Breiðdalsvík, a charming coastal hamlet dotted with black sand beaches and surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks. Take a stroll around the docks or make friends with some locals, before making your way to your next accommodation to spend the night.

Day 4 - The Open Seas

5-Day East Iceland Adventure | Local Experience

On the morning of day four, it’s time to leave dry land behind and venture out to sea. You’ll be boarding a traditional oak vessel to sail alongside idyllic islands, where you can try your hand at sea angling.

You’ll be provided with all the fishing gear necessary, as well as all the help you might need in choosing your bait and casting your line. Curious seals also reside in these waters, so look out for the rocks on which they might be lounging. If the season is high summer, here is also where you have an excellent chance of seeing puffins up close and personal.

At the end of this memorable day, after venturing the waters of the freezing North Atlantic Ocean, you’ll make your way back to your country hotel from the night before. If you caught any fish today, here’s your chance to allow the local chefs to prepare a gourmet meal, as fresh as it gets!

Enjoy the last dinner in the company of your guides and travel companions, before catching some sleep for your final day.

Day 5 - Last Day

5-Day East Iceland Adventure | Local Experience

On your last day, you’ll begin making your way to the town of Höfn. There will be plenty to see along the way, such as a scenic coastal bay dotted with colourful magic stones and a cascading waterfall.

By lunchtime, you’ll have reached the village of Djúpivogur, where you will stop for food and a short hike that should make all birdwatchers out there ecstatic. Shelducks, gadwalls, shovelers and skuas are all bird species known to nest in the area, so bring your camera along for a chance of some magnificent wildlife photography.

Arriving at Höfn, you’re free to spend the afternoon exploring the town, before catching your ride either to the airport or your accommodation in the area.
