Review of Spectacular 7 Day Northern Lights Self Drive Tour of Iceland to a Unique Ice Cave

FANTASTIC! Iceland blessed us with amazing weather and Guide to Iceland blessed us with a beautiful, unforgettable, and breathtaking tour. Everything from start to finish was extremely clear and easy to follow. The layout of the trip was perfect for what we needed and wanted. Our itinerary gave us a really perfect picture of each area we could see while we were there. Every hotel we stayed at was nice and clean. Each provided their own bit of charm. Fosshótel Stykkishólmur was wonderful, the town was super quaint and charming, and the concierge was extremely helpful, he let us know what roads were going to be tricky before we headed out. At our stay at Litli Geysir they provided a delicious dinner AND woke us up because the Northern Lights were visible (something they asked us if we would like when we checked in)!! We had a glacier hike with wonderful guides on a gorgeous day, and even were able to explore for a long while in the area. The GPS was the perfect navigator, taking coordinates allowed us to visit places we had researched that were off the beaten path. Our ice cave adventure was entertaining from start to finish!! The car rental place was super accommodating and wonderful! Guide to Iceland was incredible when our plans fell through and booked us into accommodation quickly and easily. Overall, this trip was well worth it and would highly recommend to anyone visiting Iceland (and already have!) It is pricey but if you're savvy with using grocery stores along the way. Also we got turned around several times when we were on the Northern leg of our tour and were not passable. 5 stars!

Review of Spectacular 7 Day Northern Lights Self Drive Tour of Iceland to a Unique Ice Cave

Absolutely loved our tour! The company was great, I had a few questions beforehand and I always got a response within a few hours. We hadn’t a manual 4x4 which was great, the car rental company was very helpful and the vehicle was great. We were very lucky with the weather for the time of year (4-10th January) and the road conditions were fine but definitely unusual for the time of year so I would definitely recommend this option. The sat nav was good but always worth double checking the route with road closures online as it did try to send us down some closed routes which if we hadn’t checked would have been a frustrating loss of an hour of daylight. The itinerary was easy to follow and had a good selection of sights, we used our long evenings to sit down with the map and mark out their suggestions before planning timings and deciding what we wanted to see. We managed to fit it all in (we skipped some of the little villages) but we were there at sunrise and finished at sunset. We used every last second of daylight! Everything was easy to find and the roads are well marked. Definitely arrive early to avoid the coaches. We booked comfort package hotels which were all fantastic and the breakfasts were plentiful buffets so we ate well to avoid having to buy lunch (food is incredibly expensive). We had two tours (snowmobile and ice caving) and they were easy to find, staff were helpful and very enjoyable. It did limit the time you had to see the rest of the sights but it’s a toss up with what you want to prioritise. Both of these were well worth doing! We also booked the blue lagoon for the last day which was lovely as we flew in the afternoon so it was a great way to end the trip. Overall I would say this was a great way to explore a beautiful country and gave us the freedom to see it how we wanted but without the hassle and stress. Very reassuring to know that it wasn’t planned for you and the help was available if you needed it. Thoroughly recommend and even in early January possible to make it a fantastic trip despite the weather and very short days!

Budget travel in Iceland

It is more than possible to travel around Iceland on a budget, granted you’re aware of the financial pitfalls, as well as the shortcuts around expenditure. Before arriving in Iceland, make sure to take time assessing your budget, making accommodation and rental vehicle choices appropriately.

Buying alcohol from the duty-free store, or purchasing from the state-sponsoured liquor store Vínbúðin, is a surefire way of avoiding the high costs of drinking at a bar. Almost all bars in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavík, have daily happy hours too, cutting down on the cost further.

Another means of avoiding reckless spending is to avoid 10/11 convenience stores. Despite their abundance in Iceland, prices are notoriously higher than in other stores, such as Bónus and Krónan. On that note, there is also no need to purchase bottled water in Iceland; originating from the country’s glaciers, tap and spring water are perfectly drinkable.

When it comes to cuisine, one should tread lightly when spending at restaurants. Discount offers will generally occur around lunchtime, making this a better time to eat out, while cooking at home will radically cut down on what you’re paying for grub.

It should go without saying that avoiding some of the pricier attractions, namely the Blue Lagoon, will save the wallet from a massive dent. In fact, much of Iceland can be enjoyed entirely free; Reykjavík is the perfect city for budget travellers, with plenty of compelling cultural landmarks, surrounding hiking trails and points of interest.

Naturally, avoid taxis at all costs and be aware of the services charges proposed by your bank. With handy tips such as these, it should be easy to keep your expenditure to a minimum while travelling around Iceland.

Frequently asked questions

Are budget self-driving tours still available during COVID-19?

Yes! We are still offering these self-driving tours, which are designed for the budget-conscious traveler. These tours include your vehicle and accommodation, but you get to choose any individual tours and excursions to add on.

Can we visit all the attractions ourselves even if COVID-19 has impacted local tours?

The natural wonders of Iceland are not locked away. Many lava fields, waterfalls, and breathtaking landscapes will be visible throughout your drive. COVID-19 has impacted some local tours, but we are always happy to help you find another tour or activity.

What are the included sightseeing activities in budget self drive tours?

Each self drive package has a unique itinerary. Please note the scheduled activities included in the detailed information section. Many activities in Iceland are free, including northern lights hunting and visiting national parks. Additionally, you can choose to add extra sightseeing activities to your itinerary.
