Description

Join a sightseeing tour of the beautiful natural attractions in Iceland's northern region. This is the perfect day trip of lava fields, waterfalls, astounding natural beauty and hot springs in the North of Iceland, not to be missed by any nature lover making a short stop during a cruise holiday.

The tour starts shortly after your ship docks at Akureyri harbour. You'll board a minibus and head towards the magical Lake Mývatn area, first making a stop at the impressive and historical Goðafoss waterfall. This 12-metre high waterfall may not be tall, but it sure is beautiful and plays a big role in the conversion to Christianity in Iceland's history.

You'll continue towards the gorgeous Lake Mývatn, known for its rich flora and fauna. First up, is a stop at the otherworldly Skútustaðagígar Pseudo Craters. Iceland is known for being a land of both ice and fire, and these craters were formed through volcanic activity, through explosions that occurred when flowing hot lava encountered the cold water in the lake.

Nearby there are the hauntingly beautiful Dimmuborgir lava fields, sometimes called 'The Entryway to Hell'. This location is full of lava pillars and outlandish rock formations, rich with mythology, folklore, and ghoulish walking trails.

You'll also explore the beautiful cave of Grjótagjá, where a crystal blue hot spring can be found on the rift of the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Warning, the water is too hot to enter, although a few years ago the heat was stable enough for Jon Snow and Ygritte to warm their bodies in a fiery scene from Game of Thrones.

Your final stop by Lake Mývatn is the geothermal area of Námaskarð or simply 'Hverir', meaning 'Hot Springs'. Here you'll find countless boiling mud pools, bubbling hot springs, steaming fumaroles and smelly sulfur pits. Along the way, a number of photographic stops will be made, according to weather and visibility.

Finally, you'll be returned to the harbour in Akureyri, in time for the departure of your cruise ship.

Make the most of your cruise ship stop in Akureyri town and join this fun-filled tour now. Check availability by choosing a date.
