Þakgil is both a canyon and a campsite.Photo from: Þakgil and Remundargil Canyons - Beautiful Hidden Gems in South-Iceland.

Þakgil ('Roof Canyon') is a hidden canyon, found 20 km northeast of the town of Vik. It is roughly a 30-minute drive from the town without any stops.

The best way to explore this area is on a self drive tour in Iceland.

Located between Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the outwash plain Mýrdalssandur, the canyon takes its name from the towering, moss-covered rock walls that shelter it from the elements.

This luminous green flora enlivens Þakgil, making it appear as a natural oasis in an otherwise dark, volcanic landscape. For hikers and nature enthusiasts alike, Þakgil is considered an excellent alternative to Landmannalaugar.

This image is only enforced by the crystalline waterfall hidden in the canyon's depths, easy to find given the water trickles right down into Þakgil campsite. At the campsite itself, it is possible to rent out a small pine cottage or to simply pitch up a tent. The campsite is open annually from June 1st until 31st of August.
