Daily itinerary

Day 1
This tour combo allows you to explore inside a magma chamber of a dormant volcano.

Day 1 - Inside a Volcano

Just south of Reykjavík city lies the volcano, Þríhnúkagígur, and today, you'll venture inside its empty magma chamber. You will meet your guide at a parking lot near the Bláfjöll mountains. Make sure you remember to put on your hiking boots because this tour will start with a 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) hike across a vast lava field.

Once you reach the crater, you will be equipped with a helmet and a harness before you'll enter a giant elevator that will take you inside the volcano's chamber. The sheer size of the crater will surely leave you in awe, as well as the vibrant colors found within. The volcano's past eruptions created intense heat and pressure, which painted the crater's walls in incredible yellow, orange, blue, red, and purple shades.

The descent will take a few minutes. After all, you could easily fit massive monuments such as the Statue of Liberty and Hallgrímskirkja church inside the caldera. Once you've reached the bottom, your guide will let you out of the elevator so you can explore the volcano's ground and its otherworldly volcanic sculptures.

Once you've reached the surface again, you'll hike back through the lava field towards the parking lot, where you can continue your journey around Iceland.

Zoom across the ancient ice on a snowmobile with this fantastic tour combo.

Day 2 - Snowmobiling on a Glacier

Today, you’ll feel the adrenaline surging through your veins as you speed across Langjökull glacier on a snowmobile. Start the day by making your way to one of the Golden Circle sightseeing trail sites, Gullfoss waterfall.

From the parking lot of the beautiful Gullfoss, you’ll board a massive vehicle that will take you into the Highlands to Langjökull glacier. Once there, you’ll be given overalls, a helmet, and a lesson on how to operate snowmobiles.

Then there is nothing left but to mount your ride and head out into the blinding whiteness of the glacier. You’ll zigzag through the powdery snow and ride up and down hills before you take a quick break to enjoy the magnificent view from the top of this country’s second-largest glacier.

After the break, you’ll ride back to the snowmobile basecamp and then jump back on board the monster truck that will take you back to Gullfoss waterfall. You can then spend the rest of the day exploring the other sights on the Golden Circle sightseeing trail.

Day 3
Stand on top of a glacier and take in the magnificent view with a glacier hiking tour.

Day 3 - Glacier Hike

At the southeast corner of the country, you’ll find the beautiful Skaftafell Nature Reserve, nestled under the great Vatnajökull glacier. Here, green flora grows between black volcanic sands and a pearly white glacier, creating a fairytale-like landscape. Today, you’ll get a fantastic view of this stunning scenery with a hike to the top of one of Vatnajökull’s outlet glaciers.

You’ll meet your guide at the Skaftafell parking lot, who will lead you on a short hike to the glacier’s tongue. There, you’ll receive all the equipment needed for an excursion like this, from crampons to an ice ax. The guide will show you how to use your new tools and tell you how to scale this massive ice cap.

Then you’ll head on to the ice, and through the dramatically carved landscape, past deep cracks, blue crevasses, and impressive ice formations. You’ll get a fantastic view of the mountains that encircle the glacier, which, on a bright day, include Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnúkur.

After breathing in the fresh mountain air on top of the glacier and snapping a photo or two, you’ll start your descent down the glacier. Once back at the parking lot, you’ll bid farewell to your guides and continue on your journey around Iceland.
